Support Staff Full-time New Position

The Learning Skills Advisor supports students experiencing learning difficulties through informed learning strategies education.

Through a referral process, the incumbent is responsible for delivering learning strategies and interventions by developing individualized plans with students.

The Advisor simultaneously establishes and delivers programming aimed at areas for academic growth and provides expertise and recommendations for informed program development.


Responsibilities:


Service Delivery

  • Designing, delivering, and monitoring individual learning strategy plans for students based on formal and informal assessments
  • Instructing students in learning strategies, using delivery methods specific to the student's unique learning strengths and challenges
  • Assisting students in identifying and enhancing learning preferences and strengths while compensating for deficits
  • Delivering a plan of specific learning skills strategies in response to student requests, assessment tools, and or information from referring sources (faculty/service area)
  • Identifying students with a suspected learning disability and offering a screening tool to make an appropriate referral to Accessible Learning
  • Facilitating appropriate referrals to support student issues beyond academic skills (i.e. personal concerns, other academic issues, career, suspected learning disability, etc.)
  • Participate in the implementation of specified accommodations
  • Maintaining accurate and uptodate case records of direct contact with students
  • Consult with faculty, Student Success team members, and other college personnel, to support early intervention and transition programming
  • Partnering with academic programs to identify trends and areas of significant need
  • Providing professional development for student leaders as requested (i.e. learning strategies for Peer Tutors or Conestoga Student Inc. Board members)
  • Consulting with the Manager on students of particular concern, exceptional requests, escalated situations, issues such as academic integrity, or recommending Coordinated Care Counselling referrals

Research & Development

  • Staying current in the fields of learning strategies, adult education, disabilities, and technology, including assistive technologies
  • Researching, developing, and maintaining learning strategies resource materials, and targeted academic skills programming (i.e. asynchronous modules, videos, planner tools, etc.)
  • Developing and facilitating relevant education for staff and faculty supporting with academic skills content to support student success
  • Developing activity cycle(s) and strategic direction for the Learning Skills at the College
  • Staying current with AODA and the Ontario Human Rights Code, College policies and procedures, and advising and retention best practices

Administration

  • Supporting the operations and management teams in the development and maintenance of Learning Skills Advising training documentation and best practices
  • Collecting and maintaining statistics relevant to Ministry reporting guidelines and the requirements of the College in coordination with the operations and management teams
  • Participating in relevant meetings and actively contributing to the progression and operations of the larger Student Success team, the advising team, and college committees

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree in Education, Psychology, or a related field
  • Three years of experience working in an educational environment, preferably at the postsecondary level, assisting students with learning strategies to maximize their potential
  • Experience working with students who face learning barriers, including students with learning disabilities
  • Ability to understand the academic implications of diagnoses related to specific learning disabilities, ADHD, and other disabilities at the postsecondary level
  • Specific education related to learning disabilities, Learning Strategies Certificate, or a Master's Degree is an asset
  • Understanding of the metacognitive and academic deficits of adults with LD/ADHD
  • Ability to implement effective methods for assisting students with LD and AD/HD
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong assessment skills in identifying learning barriers and other barriers affecting performance
