Duties and Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Head of Access Services and under the direction of the Coordinator, Library Reserves Services, the incumbent is responsible for a wide variety of public and processing duties with the goal of facilitating the provision of short-term resources to support Carleton University courses.

He/she provides support and assistance to University faculty and instructors by acquiring and/or facilitating access to materials from the Library's collections, faculty and instructor-owned materials, and electronic documents required for course readings.

Searches for materials using various online resources; converts print materials to electronic formats for online use via Ares, the course reserve management system; obtains copyright permission for book chapters, articles and other print resources; provides stable links to full-text articles from electronic journals or e-books; and organizes and stores electronic content for future use in courses.

The incumbent works on a scheduled basis at the Reserves service desk to assist students to access materials in the Reserves Collection and online in Ares, and to assist instructors to access Ares in the instructor view, to explain the features of Ares, and to create instructor accounts.

He/she performs other related duties including working at the Library Services Desk as required.


Qualifications:


The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of Library regulations, procedures, and services, as well as general knowledge of University structure.
  • Ability to conduct investigative work, pay strict attention to detail and maintain careful records.
  • Ability to work as a team member, to manage time efficiently, organize work effectively, to communicate well and to deal tactfully, efficiently and effectively with people.
  • Able to cope with high volume workload and meet deadlines with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Familiarity with cataloguing techniques and record management would be considered an asset.

Education and Experience:


The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • Bachelor's Degree and Library technician diploma
  • 6 months of related Library experience
