The Bruyère Research Institute (BRI) partners with Bruyère Continuing Care (Bruyère), the University of Ottawa and other stakeholders to conduct relevant and practical health sciences research related to medical education and improving the quality of life for the aging population and people requiring continuing care.


Function summary
We are currently seeking a Research Assistant 1 to provide research and administrative assistance to the principal investigator, Dr. Lisa Sheehy, to complete day-to-day tasks associated with the Integrating Technology and Clinical Care Research Team.

This part-time job will ideally be spread over 3-4 days/week, with flexibility regarding times/days and in-person/virtual, as demanded by the project's requirements.

The Research Assistant 1 will support a variety of tasks ranging from data collection and analysis, reporting results and more.

The individual must be adaptable, flexible, independent and able to multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced environment. Most of the Assistant's time will be spent working on a project investigating the use of immersive virtual reality experiences to reduce pain and distress during painful events (i.e. wound dressing changes) for patients living in complex continuing care.


Main duties and responsibilities:

Data Collection & Analysis - 60%

  • Liaise with clinicians and managers regarding the research study
  • Recruit participants from patients living in complex continuing care
  • Provide immersive virtual reality experiences to participants
  • Collect and oversee the collection of data while ensuring data quality
  • Analyze and evaluate qualitative or quantitative data with moderate support of Principal Investigator
  • Develop and/or adapt specific research and data collection methodologies, protocols, systems, and techniques, as appropriate to the area of research specialty with minor support of Principal Investigator
  • Present research findings to team members and others

Other Research Support - 40 %

  • Support grant and manuscript writing as required under the supervision of the Principal Investigator
  • Support the production of conference publications and posters
  • Provide other ad hoc support to support a broad range of research activities in a fastpaced environment
  • This job description is not exhaustive. Additional duties may be added as the projects progress. Additional casual hours recruiting/collecting data for other research projects may be available. Applicants who are currently registered parttime or fulltime as university students may be eligible for a BioTalent grant which provides additional paid hours._

Required Qualifications and Competencies:

  • In the process of completing undergraduate degree and/or one year of relevant experience
  • Master's degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience (an asset)
  • Experience in research related to aging, health service delivery (an asset)
  • Comfort working with patients in complex continuing care and rehabilitation settings
  • Working knowledge of relevant data analysis software (SPSS, NVIVO etc.)
  • Working knowledge of Quantitative and Qualitative research methods
  • A high level of attention to detail and process
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage overlapping project phases and meet deadlines
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, including the ability to adapt to a dynamic project environment, and work in a virtual environment such as teleconferences, emeetings and video conferencing)
  • Able to work onsite, at Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital and St. Vincent Hospital
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment and independently
  • Respectful and compassionate with patients, family members and staff
  • Excellent phone manner, comfortably able to call participants, family members and study partners
  • Exceptional communication skills, including written and verbal (in English)

Suggested Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Ability to speak and write in French
  • Interest in learning about technology and its use in health care (i.e. immersive virtual reality)
