    Located at St. Peter's Hospital, the Behavioral Health Program is a specialized service for adults who have a diagnosis of dementia and exhibit challenging behaviors. These behaviors may include verbally or physically responsive behaviors in relation to exit seeking, wandering, activities of daily living and social interaction. All admissions occur with the goal of discharge to a lower level of care. Admission can occur from home or another hospital. Admissions from Long Term Care (LTC) are for a 60 day assessment and treatment period with expected return to the bed held in LTC. Consultation with LTC staff occurs to ensure continuity of care when the person returns.

    Position Summary

    Our Behavioural Health Program nurses are set up for success and go through a comprehensive onsite orientation program, led by experienced health care professionals and educators. As a member of this interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Practical Nurse provides patient care in accordance with the standards of The College of Nurses of Ontario, nursing standards and policies/procedures at St. Peter's Hospital and current Gerontological Nursing Practice. Reporting to the Clinical Manager or delegate, the Registered Practical Nurse provides nursing care under the direction of and in collaboration with the RN and/or Case Manager.

    Schedule Work Hours

    Rotating days, nights, evenings, weekends and holidays

    Qualifications
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Gentle Persuasive Approaches (Basics Workshop) preferred
  • Demonstrated competent nursing skill
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Demonstrated excellent problem-solving and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated proficiency in working with patients, families, peers and multidisciplinary healthcare teams in an effective, professional, caring manner
  • Ability to set priorities and organize work in response to patient needs
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the physical and safety requirements of the position
  • Ability to attend work regularly; demonstrated by an acceptable attendance record
  • Experience working with patients with dementia preferred
  • As a condition of employment, you are required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to Employee Health Services.
