- Evaluate clients to identify physical strengths and dysfunction and to determine movement potential
- Determine functional goals for patient based on problems identified
- Formulate treatment plan and continually reassess effectiveness
- Prioritize clients in terms of acuity
- Determine appropriateness of referral
- Establish and administer treatment program and modify as patient status dictates
- Collaborate and consult with other health care professionals in planning and providing patient care
- Ensure patient's safety during treatment
- Determine if follow-up is required and ensure that is delivered
- Select and recommend adaptive equipment including mobility aids (walkers/canes), etc.
- Determine duration and frequency of treatment, plan and manage discharge event
- Maintain legally required medical records: including patient findings, analysis, treatment plan and rationale, response to treatment and discharge plans.
- Write progress reports to doctors/health care professional in hospital, community and other agencies
- Regularly review inpatient charts for pertinent information from other disciplines
- Perform chart audits and respond to audit outcomes.
- Document in accordance with the standards of the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario and in compliance with The Royal documentation standards.
- Responsible for supervision the following staff assigned to the Geriatric program: Occupational Therapy Assistant/Physiotherapy Assistant; Students; and Volunteers
- Provide education to employees concerning Safe Patient Handling
- Provide Lifts and Transfers equipment training to staff.
- Guide staff about potential risks to avert staff injuries.
- Ensure patient confidentiality
- Assess for custom-made splints
- Participate in collecting accurate data and maintenance of ethical standards
- Teach family members or others who will be responsible for ongoing care of patient after discharge
- Responsible for establishing and conducting educational programs for hospital staff, clients and families
- Responsible for upgrading theoretical and clinical knowledge by attending courses to keep abreast of current physiotherapy trends
- Responsible for developing research protocols, conducting research programs or studies in any area of physiotherapy
- Attend and actively participate in meetings and discipline specific committees (. Falls Prevention Committee, Safe Patient Handling)
- Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.
- Ensure a work environment that is conducive to The Royal's Respectful Workplace policy.
- Masters and/or Bachelor's Degree in Physiotherapy
- Registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. Eligible for membership in the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
- Assistive Device Program (ADP) authorizer status preferred. Consideration may be given to candidates who commit to completing the training within 12 months of employment in the position.
- Physiotherapy experience, preferably in Geriatrics.
- Excellent communication skills, organizational ability, critical thinking and goal setting skills.
- Group leadership and facilitation experience and skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of community resources in Ottawa-Carleton.
- Knowledge of Mental Health Act and other relevant legislation.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member; comfortable with the interdependence, consensus decision-making, and accountability to team needs.
- Evidence of client-directed practice of service delivery.
- Sound understanding of the effects of physical aging and disease, dementia and responsive behaviours as well as an understanding of areas of vulnerability for this population.
- Non Violent Crisis Intervention training an asset.
- Bilingual (French/English) is mandatory. English level A- is mandatory in oral comprehension, expression, reading, and writing. French level A- is mandatory in oral comprehension and expression. Salary Range: $39.19 to $54.66 per hour
