Description

The Operations Supervisor is responsible for providing a safe, customer oriented, cost effective response to our customers' transloading needs and is accountable for all aspects of the operation including safety, contract maintenance, workflow processes and procedures, people management, budgeting, procurements, and reporting, while working alongside the Terminal Operator.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Safety_
  • Proficient in Safety Management Systems such as Employee Efficiency Testing, and Loss Prevention Observations
  • Ensure compliance and necessary audits of both the physical terminal and employee performance are conducted and recorded; followup action is performed as may be necessary, in a timely manner
  • Be a leader in safe work practices; responsible for the mentoring of employees in all aspects of transloading operations
  • Planning & Service Delivery_
  • Ensure the terminal is providing service in keeping with Cando's vision and guide the operation in developing and maintaining plans for continuing operations
  • Develop short and long terms goals with objectives for the terminal and ensure the employees and/or subcontractors have the understanding, skills, training, and resources to achieve the objectives
  • Ensure efficient work systems and procedures are in place for the operation and help employees adjust where necessary
  • Liaison with customer's marketing and logistics groups to maintain effective Supply Chain Management
  • Perform daily transload activities ensuring all customer requirements are met
  • Maintain facility maintenance planning and scheduling
  • Understand and perform safety, environmental and regulatory responsibilities such as hazard identification, equipment lock out, incident investigations, regulatory compliance initiatives and emergency response
  • Leadership & Employee Development_
  • Influence and inspire others to achieve company objectives
  • Build and maintain positive and healthy relationships
  • Lead others in adapting to innovative work environments and ensure awareness of division initiatives, decisions, policies, etc. are communicated
  • Build and maintain positive and healthy relationships
with all stakeholders and promote harmonious employee, customer, and contractor relations while guiding and coaching employees, supervisors, and other managers

  • Prepare and implement employee development plans; ensure all employees have adequate training to contribute fully to the project
  • Management and Administration_
  • Develop and maintain capital and operating budgets, personnel needs, and resource requirements for the division

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Demonstrates a strong conviction toward employee, public, and environmental safety
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing with people of all backgrounds, levels of comprehension including managers, employees, customers, and the public
  • Demonstrates initiative to work with others to foster a respectful workplace; creates a work environment that is open to maintaining positive relationships
  • Considerable knowledge of modern principles, practices, and techniques in motivating employees and building successful working teams
  • General understanding of the principles of efficient service delivery
  • Demonstrates innovation and responsibility in the decisionmaking process
  • Ability to implement best practices in skill development, training, and service delivery which will be sustainable
  • Ability to perform transload operations safely and efficiently
  • Technical knowledge of process and instrumentation equipment
  • Ability to interpret facility drawings
  • Knowledge in rail operations, maintenance, and transportation
  • Knowledge in Transport Canada and provincial regulation
  • Knowledge in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental regulations
  • Proficient in a Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook with the skill to adapt easily to other software systems
  • Ability to maintain a valid provincial drivers' license, and meet all safety and customer requirements
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

Education & Experience

  • Experience in managing for efficiency and effectiveness to bring about change in a fastpaced environment
  • Minimum of five (5) years in a progressive leadership position preferable in the transloading environment
  • Experience working with financial information, preparing budgets, and bid and/or tender documents is an asset
