Job Summary


The Bradshaw Research Institute for Minerals and Mining, or BRIMM, promotes cross-disciplinary research spanning the entire mining life cycle, from early exploration to mine closure and rehabilitation.

BRIMM is looking for a Program Manager to develop and sustain a strategic portfolio of grant funded research, Indigenous engagement, and knowledge mobilization projects within the Mining Microbiome Theme.

Their initial focus will be on managing financial and reporting requirements associated with the Mining Microbiome Analyst Platform (M-MAP) Digital Supercluster project and implementing a longer-term funding roadmap in collaboration with the Mining Microbiome Theme Leads at UBC and BRIMM Director.


This.6 FTE position is fully grant funded and is responsible for program management of the Mining Microbiome Theme within BRIMM.

Initial responsibilities are focused on UBC-related activities within the context of the M-MAP Digital Supercluster project. The M-MAP project consists of multiple industry partners, each responsible for managing project activities within their own respective organizations. The Phase 1 budget for the M-MAP project is $7.77M, of which $2.71M is allocated for activities at UBC/BRIMM.

The Program Manager will be responsible for coordinating M-MAP work efforts performed at UBC, including, but not limited to, providing expertise in the research field, grant facilitation, account management, financial and milestone reports communications and integration between project participants, and identifying research synergies and creating opportunities for new avenues of research and funding.

Organizational Status


This position reports directly to the BRIMM Director and Mining Microbiome Theme Leads, and interacts with other researchers and units at UBC including the LSI automation core (Biofactorial) and Biobank facilities.

The Program Manager will act as a liaison between grant funded participants including UBC students, staff, research faculty and directors, ORS, UBC Finance, and VPRI.

They will also serve as an integral participant on the M-MAP project management team, working closely with other consortium members and project managers to ensure timely and effective project outcomes.

Work Performed

Strategic Program Management for BRIMM Mining Microbiome Theme

  • Developing and sustaining a grant portfolio to support the M-MAP project in Phase 2 and subsequent activities.
  • Organize and schedule networking activities, workshops, and other initiatives.
  • Facilitate internal and external collaborations.
  • Preparing budgets and forecast, monitor, and report on completion of research milestones and deliverables across the grant portfolio.
  • Assess human resources needs with BRIMM Director and Theme leaders, reviewing staffing levels, evaluating current needs including reducing appointments or hiring additional short term project staff or students. Ensures milestones are reached with the staffing levels associated with Theme operations and management.
  • Recruits and selects applicants for hire within the Mining Microbiome Theme support staff. This position will hire, train, supervise, and review facility employees and if necessary discipline & terminate positions.
  • Participates in grant writing in support of Mining Microbiome Theme research activities.
  • Develops a program for community engagement to showcase research impact and opportunities, including planning events for the public, potential funders, alumni groups, business leaders, and other academic institutions. This includes public presentations at community events as well as at academic and business conferences.
