POSITION FUNCTION
Perform various tasks to prepare sites, construct forms and finish concrete for curbs, gutters and sidewalks.
KEY DUTIES
Prepare sites for concrete work such as sidewalks, curbs, gutters and driveways; read and interpret engineering plans and grade sheets to determine the location of underground services and utilities; set up traffic control; act as padman to direct the operation of various construction and excavation equipment.
Calculate grades and alignments established from grade sheets and control points; construct wooden forms; set metal pins and arms to control the alignment of the curb extruder.
Place concrete by shovelling and levelling; finish with trowel, broom and edger; determine, prepare and apply various chemical retardants and curing compounds; finish exposed aggregate concrete by applying chemicals, broom and washing surfaces, and applying other techniques such as stamping.
Install and finish various catch basins, castings, boxes, interlocking paving bricks, tiles and sleeves; apply surface cleaning and finishing treatments such as acid washes and sealers.
Operate various hand and power equipment such as shovels, jackhammers and concrete saws; operate Bobcat type loaders as required; operate a vehicle to transport equipment and materials.
Perform related duties where qualified.

Work is assigned and reviewed by supervisor.
Problems are referred to supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Effort:
Build forms, place and finish concrete. (frequent)
Operate jackhammers, cut-off saws, plate tampers and compactors. (occasional)

Work Environment:
Work outside in all weather conditions. (continuous)

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Understand and apply the techniques of concrete construction and finishing.
Use hand tools, instruments and operate power equipment.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, utility information sheets and grade sheets.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Work and operate equipment safely.
QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
High school graduation.
Current and valid class 5 B.C. Driver's licence.
Experience:
2 years of experience in concrete construction and finishing.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
Work schedule: Monday to Friday, (7:00 am – 3:30 pm, 40 hour work week)
$34.35 per hour, Pay Grade 7
