About Our Opportunity:


As the Program Specialist you will be responsible for administering the programs and services for the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency, Women in Skilled Trades Initiative.


As the Program Specialist, you will carry out activities necessary to effectively fulfill the legislative obligations of the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act and mandate of the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications System as articulated in the Agency's operating charter.

You will help build knowledge and awareness of the services provided by the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency and help build awareness and understanding of the institutional barriers' women face in the skilled trades.

You will work collaboratively as a member of an integrated, multi-disciplinary team involving other divisions of the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency, other provincial partners, women working in skilled trades, and external stakeholders including women-focused and equity-deserving organizations and/or communities.

This position reports to the Manager, Special Initiatives.


Primary Accountabilities:


  • Engaging employers and providing guidance and support to employers and women in skilled trades, you will develop/codevelop and implement an engagement plan.
  • Working closely with Industry Training Consultants to provide case management support for women apprentices and provide guidance to help them successfully navigate the apprenticeship system.
  • Engage with women in skilled trades individually or through networks to better understand the challenges impacting attraction and retention of women in skilled trades and make recommendations to improve the apprenticeship experience for them.
  • Engage employers and assist with creating a welcoming workplace that is respectful and inclusive for a diversity of women. Schedule and facilitate respectful and inclusive workplace workshops and conduct presentations.
  • Assist employers and women in skilled trades with navigation through the various programs and services offered by the Agency. Making referrals internally or externally to other supports and resources where needed.
  • Agreement Management and Administration of financial incentives and supports to women in skilled trades to help remove barriers to starting careers in the skilled trades.
  • Provide support and consistent monitoring of activities & financial supports for both women in skilled trades and employers.
  • Codevelop mentoring program for women in skilled trades in collaboration with Program Lead and partnering organizations.
  • Support the Manager and Program Lead in the review of program components, which includes doing followup and monitoring of program participants and reports.
  • The Program Specialist will conduct other operational duties, as required, within the Special Initiatives Team and Program & Operations division.

Qualifications and Experience:


This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a bachelor's degree with 5 years of related experience or an acceptable combination of training and experience.


You have a high level of independent judgement, initiative, strong time management and decision-making skills, an ability to multi-task and handle and organize large workloads and the ability to prepare and execute plans and adapt as needed.


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

A vehicle and a valid drivers' license are required to fulfill the roles of this position.
