    Position Overview

    Reporting to the Supervisor of Maintenance or the Supervisor, Capital Projects and Development, the Maintenance Repairperson ensures that community housing properties and units are maintained to standards set by Health and Safety and residential tenancy legislation. The City of Cornwall is seeking self-directed and dedicated individuals to carry out various general day-to-day maintenance repairs for various types of housing units and buildings within the Cornwall and SDG portfolio of community housing units.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The Maintenance Repairperson(s) is responsible for:

    • Repairs and maintenance of housing units as required by daily work orders and preparation for unit turnover.
    • General upkeep of buildings and grounds to project a positive image of community housing.
    • Repair and/or replace doors, windows, screens, cabinets, cupboards, and countertops.
    • Removal and replacement of floor tiles, laminate and carpet/carpet tiles flooring and countertops
    • Minor electrical repairs; plumbing tasks, including unclogging drains, repairing or replacing faucets, sinks, toilets and laundry tubs.
    • Drywall repair or replacement, ceramic tile repairs and grouting
    • Test, check and inspect mechanical and life safety systems When requested or as needed, provide assistance to contractors and emergency personnel.
    • Basic plumbing tasks such as replacement of sinks, faucets, water supply lines, draining of lines, toilets, and unclogging of drains.
    • Basic carpentry such as drywall repairs including finishing of joints and patches, replacement of drywall, and framing and hanging of existing or new interior doors.
    • Cleaning of all common areas including lounges, laundry rooms, garbage rooms and compactors, elevators, elevator rooms, boiler rooms, storage areas, fire exits, stairwells, windows, and public washrooms.
    • Landscaping duties including grass cutting, maintenance of flower beds, snow removal and snow/ice control.
    • Prepare housing units and other residential units prior to the arrival of new residents.
    • Maintain and/or repair of steps, railings and other fixtures found in public areas.
    • Ensure that security and safety measures are in place and perform unit, building, and systems inspections as required.
    • Report social concerns and incidents to client services staff for resolution.
    • Maintenance Repair staff are required to work a rotational on-call schedule to respond to emergencies on evenings and weekends.
    • Regular janitorial cleaning such as mopping, vacuuming, sweeping and window washing at various locations.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • The successful applicant will be a self-motivated, team player with the ability to deal tactfully and resourcefully with tenants and situations related to daily maintenance in apartment buildings, seniors' units, or family townhouse complexes.
    • Completion of secondary school
    • A minimum of one (1) year of experience as a repair worker, maintenance technician or building maintenance worker with proven ability to provide a broad range of maintenance repairs and proficiency in use of tools and equipment required to perform the functions of the position.
    • Must be familiar with life safety and mechanical systems.
    • Certification in trades would be an asset.
    • Knowledge of basic electrical standards for installation and repairs.
    • Knowledge of basic plumbing installation and repair practices.
    • Intermediate computer and technology skills required.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted Class G Drivers License.
