Position Summary
The Director of Finance provides strategic and operational leadership for the organization's financial management.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Finance, the Director oversees accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, funder reporting, compliance, and audits in a complex multi-funder environment.

This role ensures accurate, timely, and transparent financial information to support decision-making at the senior leadership and Board levels.

The Director manages the Finance team, drives efficiency in financial processes, and supports organizational risk management while maintaining strong relationships with funders, auditors, and regulatory bodies.

Education & Experience:
Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.
Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business, or related field (Master's degree an asset).
Minimum 10 years of progressive senior-level financial management experience, including team leadership.
Experience with non-profit, multi-funder, and multi-site financial operations preferred.
Advanced proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel) and financial systems such as Sage 300/Accpac.
Demonstrated experience implementing accounting and financial reporting systems.
Knowledge of risk management, governance, and compliance frameworks.
Strong proficiency in Dynamics 365 Business Central

Proven expertise in generating analytical reports and efficiently navigating both the Business Central accounting system and Jets Reports and the Dayforce payroll platform.

Ability to understand, communicate and support the mission and values of RainCity Housing, and the models/methods of supporting clients including the principles of Housing First and Harm Reduction.

List of duties
Strategic

Supports the VP of Finance and Senior Leadership Team to build and articulate the organization's strategic framework
Aligns financial strategies with the organization's mission, values, and long-term goals.
Provides insight into financial trends, risks, and opportunities to inform decision-making.
Contributes to organizational risk management by identifying and mitigating financial and operational risks.
Participates in capital and investment planning, including financing strategies, asset management, and cash flow oversight.
Develops, implements and evaluates the organization's long-term and short-term financial goals, strategies and frameworks
Establishes financial policies and solutions that increase efficiencies and promote awareness for the various programs and departments of the organization
Ensures effective quality/risk management activities are developed, implemented and evaluated to minimize organizational risks
Working with VP of Finance , develops framework for new technology to meet the organization's financial data processing, controls, and reporting requirements

Operational

Oversee all accounting functions, ensuring compliance with policies, legislation, and audit standards.
Leads the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets in collaboration with the Vice-President, Executive Directors, and Program Managers.
Produces accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including variance analysis and recommendations.

Leads year-end audit preparation and liaises with external auditors and regulatory bodies.
Ensures compliance with CRA, funder requirements, and legislative standards.

Provides strategic oversight and technical direction to the finance group to ensure the accounting, budgeting, business, payroll and auditing procedures are in place and functioning properly; ensures practices comply with external and internal audit requirements
Reviews, analyzes and interprets periodic financial results, providing direction to senior management on significant variances and trends requiring immediate action or mitigation
Maintains financial records for each program in a manner that facilitates management reports
Delivers financial reporting to all internal and external stakeholders including the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and funders, providing leadership, direction, interpretation and specific recommendations related to the reporting
Establishes guidelines for budget and forecast preparation and prepares the annual budget in consultation with the VP of Finance, Directors of Program and Program Managers
Provides leadership, direction and support to the VP of Finance and Directors in the preparation of funding application budgets
Oversees construction-related accounting, including leases, contracts and other financial commitments
Ensures accurate and timely financial statements are prepared and distributed in a timely manner; provides appropriate footnotes and comments on variances for the VP of Finance,and external auditors
Provides leadership and direction to Resource Development regarding funding and fund reporting/receipting
Ensures cash flow and cash flow forecasts are in accordance with policy; recommends and develops new policies when needed
Working with the Director of Facilities, advises the VP of Finance on appropriate insurance coverage for the organization
Develops long-term strategies and frameworks to maximize income where possible and appropriate
Manages the relationships and negotiates with banks for financial services as required and appropriate
Oversees the planning and execution of the year-end financial reporting and auditing processes;

Leads the analysis and reconciliation of monthly, quarterly, and annual variances between actual and budgeted expenditures, with a focus on both operational and staffing costs to ensure financial accuracy and strategic alignment.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all levels of RainCity's management, external agencies, governmental officials, clients and the public

Leadership & Human Resource

Leads, coaches, and develops the Finance team, ensuring high performance and succession planning.
Responsible for hiring, evaluation, professional development, discipline, and dismissal of Finance staff.
Fosters a culture of collaboration, service excellence, and continuous improvement.
Represents the organization in funder discussions, audit meetings, and external partnerships as required.
