What is Independence Summer Camp?

Independence Summer Camp is designed for people with developmental disabilities, aged This day camp will provide campers the opportunity to build independence skills, make friends, and try new things.

Independence Summer Camp exists to make everyone feel like they are strong, smart, and that they belong.

There will be four, two-week camp sessions. Each camp session will welcome 12 campers.

Who will I work with?
You will work with the Camp Director, two fellow camp counsellors, workshop leaders and volunteers.


What are my Major Duties and Responsibilities?
You will be responsible for supporting all camp activities and campers


Some jobs may include:

• Designing camp lessons, activities and workshops with the Camp Director
• Planning one new camp activity each week
• Running three camp activities each week
• Helping to run all camp programming each day (9:00 am 3:30 pm)
• Helping to set up and cleanup activities
• Providing personal support and care to campers
• Making sure that the camp is safe
• Helping campers learn new skills
• Supporting campers on community outings
• Supporting campers during camp workshops and activities
• Working together with the Camp Director to solve any problems
• Completing all L'Arche Training
• Participating in a meeting with the camp team each morning before camp (8:309:00 am)
• Introducing campers to the L'Arche London Community
• Mentoring campers
• This is an opportunity for the Camp Counsellor to develop communication, mentoring, customer service and leadership skills.

Qualifications:

• The Camp Counsellor must be between the ages of 18 and 30.
• We will prioritize hiring counsellors who have lived experience with disability.
• We are looking for a Camp Counsellor who has mastered some life skills (laundry, bus system, cooking, budgeting, job skills, gardening) so they will be able to teach our campers some of these skills.
• The Camp Counsellor must be energetic, creative, and able to work cooperatively with fellow camp staff and volunteers.
• Knowledge and appreciation of the Identity and Mission of L'Arche is an asset.

Where will I Work?
Independence Summer Camp will take place the Covenant Christian School and L'Arche London in Lambeth, Ontario.


When will I Work?
You will work Monday to Friday from June 24th to August 27th. Your daily hours will be 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (8 hours each day). You will also attend necessary training prior to June 24th. Camper Orientation Session on Wednesday, June 19th, 2024 from 4:30 - 8:30 pm.
