The
Trade, Investment and Food Safety (TIFS) Division expands and diversifies Alberta's food and bio-product manufacturing sector in local and global markets while also providing effective food safety assurance systems.


Role Responsibilities:


As a Trade Policy Advisor, you will be at the forefront of shaping Alberta's trade policies with a focus on North America.

Your primary responsibilities will include providing strategic analysis, advice, and recommendations to the Minister and Executive Team on various trade issues relevant to Alberta.

Additionally, you will lead the Tri-National Accord file, overseeing annual meetings between Canadian, United States, and Mexican officials, culminating in Alberta hosting the prestigious 2026 ACCORD meeting.


Key Responsibilities:


Strategic Analysis and Advice:


  • Conduct indepth analysis of regional and bilateral trade negotiations affecting Alberta's agrifood sector.
  • Provide actionable recommendations to develop government positions in response to trade negotiations.

International Trade Dispute Resolution

  • Monitor, analyze, and provide policy recommendations for resolving international trade disputes impacting Alberta's agricultural interests.

Role Responsibilities (Continued):


Leadership in Tri-National Accord Meetings:


  • Lead the Tri-National Accord file, ensuring successful coordination of annual meetings between Canadian, United States, and Mexican officials.
  • Oversee preparations for the 2026 ACCORD meeting hosted by Alberta, including logístical arrangements and agenda planning.

Coordination and Collaboration:


  • Coordinate trade policy efforts with Alberta departments, federal government agencies, other provincial governments, and industry stakeholders.
  • Facilitate collaboration to advance trade policy objectives and enhance market access opportunities for Alberta's agrifood products.

Strategic Trade Initiatives:


  • Take a leadership role in strategic trade initiatives aimed at improving market access and enhancing industry competitiveness.
  • Provide support and guidance to key initiatives, such as The Pre-Clearance and the Inter-Provincial Trade in Meat mandates.

Qualifications:

-
Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Commerce or related.

Plus four (4) years progressively responsible related experience such as trade policy development, economic analysis and international market research


Equivalencies maybe considered - directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
Preference will be given to those with knowledge and experience demonstrating trade policy development and the agriculture industry.


Assets:


  • At least 2 years of experience in trade policy development, economic analysis and government work experience.
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple projects.

  • Office located in Edmonton
  • Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (full time)
  • Monday to Friday (8:15 am to 4:30 pm)
  • Flexible start/end times are considered
  • There may be some occasional travel. No overtime required.
