Facility Services is looking for a carpenter to join their team

The Carpenter performs renovations, maintenance, repairs and some new construction. The duties are of moderate complexity and are completed with mínimal supervision. Assignments will vary considerably depending on the unit served.

Work may involve procedures of a technical nature and some jobs in this class may entail supervisory responsibility. Where supervision is required, the job must achieve smooth workflow by delegating assignments and explaining procedures.

Responsibilities require a qualified journeyman carpenter trade certificate along with related training and experience. The work requires the use of a variety of hand and power tools.


Work is performed within the Division/department policies and procedures and is guided by construction and maintenance standards and principles and those established by the department.

Work is completed in compliance with the Alberta Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and guidelines and the Division's goals and objectives.

There is considerable discretion exercised by the incumbent in the performance of its regular duties.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Repair, maintenance, renovations and manufacturing
  • Repair windows and door frames; replace locks
  • Rebuild cupboards, shelves and other school equipment
  • Repair floors and interior and exterior sheathing
  • Fabricate a variety of items from wood or other materials within a carpentry shop
  • Construct portable classrooms and other small structures
  • Build, modify and repair structures to withstand varying loads
  • Lay out according to blue prints erect framework, siding, flooring and roofing and complete inside trim to required specifications
  • Measure, square, saw, plane and clamp wooden sections into special shapes using table/hand/band/radial saws; jointers; drills and shapers and install the prefabricated materials in schools
  • Assist department staff with a variety of projects and provide coveroff during absences
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
  • Worksite maintenance
  • Assist in the cleanup of worksites
  • Ensure tools and equipment are operating properly and report those that are not
  • Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards
  • Estimate materials required, monitor use and keep time and materials records
  • Building site security
  • Ensure materials and tools are safely operated and stored at all times
  • Secure building as required depending on worksite requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

_ High School, plus a current Alberta Journeyman Carpenter Certificate with Red Seal Certification_

  • Several years of directly related experience
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics, including elementary geometry acquired through trades related training
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety regulations and legislation, regulations governing Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TGD) is required
  • Knowledge of department and unit policies, procedures, business and operations
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft programs
  • Word, Outlook and the Internet is required; knowledge of electronic attendance system is an asset
  • Standard First Aid/CPR is an asset
  • Ability to read plans, elevation drawings and specifications and fabricate items according to predetermined plans
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with other trades, school principals, teachers, students, coworkers and the general public
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work without direct supervision
  • Physically able to complete the duties of the job using appropriate tools and techniques (lifting up to 30Kg/66lbs)
  • Ability to schedule, plan task priorities and manage several projects with conflicting demands
  • Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license and the ability to travel to various sites within Edmonton
  • Ability to provide a clean driver's abstract upon hire and as requested
  • Possession of a full kit of recognized basic hand tools
