Job Purpose

Provides supervision and monitors the day-to-day custodial operations for Durham District School Board's (DDSB) facilities.

Partners with Maintenance Supervisors, Health & Safety Department, School Administrators, Major Projects and Construction Department on matters related to custodial services to ensure a safe and functional learning environment for students, staff, the public and community.

Plans, coordinates, supports, guides, advises, develops and manages a team of Custodians to deliver high quality custodial services in accordance with DDSB standards, Ministry requirements and various legislative regulations.

Accountabilities


SUPERVISE AND MANAGE THE TEAM:
Direct and supervise the daily activities and work of custodial staff. Motivate, develop, train and mentor staff and help manage the effective performance of the team. Conduct employee performance appraisals and provide support and guidance for professional development. Address and resolve staffing issues, and first and second level behavioural problems. Manage schedules and ensure appropriate workforce coverage to maintain regular compliment requirements. Conduct meetings with staff to carry out their assigned responsibilities. Monitor and analyze data as directed, working within established budgeting systems.


IDENTIFY MAINTENANCE, CONSTRUCTION, AND MAJOR PROJECTS NEEDS: Inspect sites and collaborate with relevant DDSB stakeholders to identify maintenance, major projects and renovation needs within DDBS Facilities, in compliance with DDSB policies, Ministry requirements and various legislative regulations. Partner with Maintenance Supervisors and Principals to oversee work orders, efficient filing and processing. Work with Construction and Major Project Supervisors on the construction of new schools, additions, and school renovations. Assist the Energy department to support Custodians with services related to the work.


PROVIDE SERVICES TO CHILDCARE CENTERS:
Oversee and manage the custodial and maintenance services provided to the childcare centers.

Ensure schedules for appropriate Custodial coverage and coordinate services provided by the childcare Supervisors, staff and early year's department managers.


SUPPORT SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS:
Liaise with school administration to ensure a safe, efficient and effective operation of the education environment. Provide direction and guidance in the resolution of issues or problems relating to custodial services.


IDENTIFY HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

Communicate and collaborate with the Health and Safety department to ensure that staff and students are provided with a safe and functional learning environment, in compliance with relevant regulation and legislative standards.


TROUBLESHOOT ISSUES WITH COMMUNITY USE OF SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT: Partner with Community Use, Custodial staff, and permit holders to ensure an efficient, effective and safe operation of Facilities Services. Provide conflict resolutions when issues arise.

Education

Completion of secondary school and a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent required.

Post secondary education in a related field preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

Supervisory skills including demonstrated ability to effectively motivate and manage a team.

Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and standards.

Ability to work well within an approved budget.

Ability to use specialized equipment/technology.

Ability to collect, record and maintain accurate, detailed, relevant and logical notes, files and information.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Experience

Eight to ten years experience working as a Custodian preferred.

Experience working as a Lead Custodian in Elementary and Secondary schools preferred.

Experience with presentations, teaching and training (i.e. Clean Sweep Trainer, Leadership Trainer etc.).


Please note:

This is a 35 hour per week permanent afternoon position.
