About the Role
The summer student will support Arts Granting and Partnerships by updating and expanding the Canada Council's Context Briefs, which provide essential background information to peer assessors on underserved or less‑understood arts communities and practices.
These briefs help ensure fair and informed assessment, especially when peers may be unfamiliar with specific cultural contexts, regional realities, or artistic practices.
Many existing briefs now require updates to reflect current trends in the arts sector, and new briefs are needed on topics such as rural and remote arts realities, live performing arts for young audiences, and provincial or territorial contexts.
Under The Direct Supervision Of The Director, Granting Programs Strategy And Coordination, The Student Will Conduct Research, Draft Content, And conduct internal and External consultation For The following deliverablesUpdates to Existing Context Briefs
Official Language Minority Communities (OLMC) Context Brief - review and update to reflect new data, evolving community realities, emerging artistic practices, and current policy landscape.
This work would be in tandem with and informed by the current evaluation activities of Council's support for OLMC arts communitiesCulturally Diverse Arts - update to reflect Council's revised Equity Policy, evolving artistic practices, new equity related discourse, and shifts in how racialized artists self identify and work across disciplines.
There could be an opportunity to retire the Council's context brief on cultural appropriation by incorporating relevant information into this revised document.
Artists and Community Collaboration - refresh to incorporate new models of collaboration, updated terminology, and cross sector examples emerging from community engaged practices.
Development of New Context BriefsRural and Remote Arts Organizations - documenting unique operating conditions, travel implications, resource constraints, and community embedded practices.
Performing Arts for Young Audiences - highlighting the distinct characteristics of PAYA creation, touring, audience development, and business models in collaboration with relevant arts service organizations.
Program Context Briefs including Regional Information - providing broad contextual overviews for relevant programs, including regional arts ecosystems, sector-specific challenges, and structural considerations.

Experience collaborating across teams and disciplines - The role requires coordination with multiple sections providing the student with valuable experience in cross departmental collaboration and professional communication.
Development of professional writing for a national audience - Preparing briefs that will be used by peer assessors gives the student practical experience in writingMentorship and knowledge-building - The student will receive guidance from staff across the Arts Granting Programs Division, gaining insight into career pathways in arts administration.
Requirements For The PositionWho is eligible to apply?
This program is intended for students.
To be considered, you must:
Currently be enrolled as a full-time student at a recognized post-secondary institution;
Be enrolled as a part-time or full-time student in the next academic year (proof will be required);
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a student with a valid study permit (for international students); and
Meet the basic requirements of the position.
Duration
The duration of employment for the Summer Student Program is sixteen (16) weeks. Students will start work on May 11, 2026.
Education
The student must be enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program directly related to the key responsibilities of the position, including arts and culture programs related to public policy, organizational models and governance, research, or cultural studies relevant to any aspect of the project.

An intermediate level in reading comprehension (B)
