ANIMAL PROTECTION OFFICER (CONTRACT)
This interesting and challenging position is responsible for the following:

  • Responding to Animal Welfare concerns and determining appropriate course of action under the Animal Care Act of Manitoba.
  • Conducting inspections to determine compliance under the Animal Care Act of Manitoba.
  • Enforcing compliance to ensure adequate animal care and husbandry, taking action to relieve animal of distress.
  • Transporting animals to veterinary facilities and shelters in order to receive appropriate care.
  • Issuing recommendations and corrective measures including monetary penalties to correct noncompliance as required under the Act.
  • Collecting evidence and samples
  • Liaising with partner agencies such as Public Health, Police, Office of the Fire Commissioner and Child & Family Services as required to ensure the safety of animals as well as the general public.
  • Please be advised this is a contract position. You will be required to travel within your general area.

REQUIRED/ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:_

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Education High School diploma or GED
  • Experience working with animals e.g Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs), animal boarding facilities staff, livestock farm staff, By-Law officer, Conservation officers, Government regulatory staff etc.
  • Strong animal handling skills & experience
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry
  • Strong written & verbal communication
  • Strong Interpersonal skills
  • Must be reliable and flexible with availability
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and consult supervisors as required
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to deescalate seemingly contentious conditions
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License (Full)
  • Ability to provide a clean criminal background & vulnerable sector check
  • Effective problem solving and decision making skills
  • Basic computer & typing skills

Desired Qualifications:_

  • Post Secondary Education
  • One or more completed years in Veterinary Technology, Animal Health Technology, Police Foundations or equivalent
  • Experience with various animal species
  • Knowledge of a second language or culture

Job Types:
Fixed term contract, Casual, Freelance

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed
