ANIMAL PROTECTION OFFICER (CONTRACT)
This interesting and challenging position is responsible for the following:
- Responding to Animal Welfare concerns and determining appropriate course of action under the Animal Care Act of Manitoba.
- Conducting inspections to determine compliance under the Animal Care Act of Manitoba.
- Enforcing compliance to ensure adequate animal care and husbandry, taking action to relieve animal of distress.
- Transporting animals to veterinary facilities and shelters in order to receive appropriate care.
- Issuing recommendations and corrective measures including monetary penalties to correct noncompliance as required under the Act.
- Collecting evidence and samples
- Liaising with partner agencies such as Public Health, Police, Office of the Fire Commissioner and Child & Family Services as required to ensure the safety of animals as well as the general public.
- Please be advised this is a contract position. You will be required to travel within your general area.
REQUIRED/ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:_
- At least 18 years of age
- Education High School diploma or GED
- Experience working with animals e.g Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs), animal boarding facilities staff, livestock farm staff, By-Law officer, Conservation officers, Government regulatory staff etc.
- Strong animal handling skills & experience
- Knowledge of animal husbandry
- Strong written & verbal communication
- Strong Interpersonal skills
- Must be reliable and flexible with availability
- Ability to work with diverse groups of people
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and consult supervisors as required
- Strong time management skills
- Ability to deescalate seemingly contentious conditions
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License (Full)
- Ability to provide a clean criminal background & vulnerable sector check
- Effective problem solving and decision making skills
- Basic computer & typing skills
Desired Qualifications:_
- Post Secondary Education
- One or more completed years in Veterinary Technology, Animal Health Technology, Police Foundations or equivalent
- Experience with various animal species
- Knowledge of a second language or culture
