Overall Mandate:


The primary function of the Production Supervisor is to oversee and execute the operation of the packline while maintaining a focus on quality, maximizing efficiency, meeting sales order requirements on time, and getting growers the best possible return for their fruit.

Leadership:


  • Overseeing the daily operation of the packline, making timely decisions in regard to packing, scheduling, and staffing

  • Works openly and cohesively with all packline staff to ensure all staff understand the goals and priorities of the organization
  • Creates an environment of approachability and open communication in order to help staff address problems and find solutions

Organization:


  • The Production Supervisor understands what is required to implement and maintain policies and processes that are nimble, efficient, responsive to need, and understandable by all stakeholders. This includes developing processes that are straightforward to be maintained by subordinates in the organization.

Problem Solving:


  • The Production Supervisor is committed to approaching problems with a solutionsoriented mindset, and can work constructively with all team members

Job Duties and Responsibilities:


Daily Packline Functions:

  • Setting strategic packing plans based on existing inventory levels and desired/forecasted sales outputs
  • Making timely decisions to best allocate resources throughout the packline, as sales orders change, staffing issues arise, or equipment malfunctions
  • Making necessary adjustments to operations and processes based on reported efficiencies and quality results
  • Monitoring and managing the quality of fruit throughout production and of outgoing product
Regular Functions

  • Working with the Senior Manager, Operations to determine optimal times to open CA storage rooms and run fruit down the packline
  • Communicating with Maintenance personnel to ensure that packline related maintenance is being appropriately prioritized
  • Delegating work during down time ensuring general upkeep of the plant is completed
  • Managing packing associated with product recalls
  • Ensuring health and safety standards are met
  • Coordinating with contracted cleaning crew
Human Resources Functions

  • Managing staff in a unionized environment
  • Ensuring staffing needs are fulfilled through scheduling, hiring, termination, and employee layoffs
  • Working with the Senior Manager, Operations, and the Human Resources Manager to monitor employee performance
Occasional/Annual Tasks

  • Oversee the annual testing and maintenance of all plant storage rooms prior to harvest season
  • Work in a production management capacity at the Norfolk Cherry Company
  • Provide support to, or fill in for, duties of the Production Administrator as needed

Accountability:

The Production Supervisor is required to fulfill the priorities of the NFGA. In doing so, they contribute to the success of the organization and its employees, growers, and customers.


This individual is a member of the HACCP team and works to ensure our food product is safe; that safety, legality, and quality systems are followed and has authority to initiate and document action in regard to quality and food safety.

The Production Supervisor will also support all staff to contribute to the effectiveness of the food safety management system.

This individual will participate in all required training as it pertains to this position, including food safety training, and Employee Handbook awareness.

This position will also participate in validation and verification activities of the Food Safety Management system where required.


Education and Experience:


  • A postsecondary education relative to food production, business, or other applicable field of study
  • Experience in food or related production an asset
  • Leadership experience
  • Knowledge of HACCP, JHSC, Food Safety Management Systems, FAMOUS, and Quality Assurance are not required but are valuable

Key Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Knowledge and familiarity with production line operations and procedures.
  • Commitment to continuing education that supports awareness and understanding of new operations that may present opportunities and or threats to the production line or organization.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written. Have a high degree of emotional intelligence and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate to different audiences and manage interpersonal relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Selfstarter and eager to learn new concepts, skills, and systems, and must be able to master these attributes and download them to their team.
  • Agility to adapt to change, manage evolving issues or situations, backfill critical roles where required.
  • Ability to act with, ensure that subordinates and leadership approach employee issues and concerns with appropriate empathy, compassion, and confident
