Position Summary


The English Tutoring Centre (formerly the Centre for Academic English) provides a variety of services including one-on-one tutoring, skill-building workshops, and developing study resources for students.

Our goal is to assist students in becoming independent learners and achieving their academic potential.

Our tutors utilize a variety of tutoring methodology, including the Socratic method, the Tutoring Cycle, and coaching students to use appropriate metacognitive and study skills.

Tutors strive to give each student an individualized experience that addresses their specific needs.

Students attend tutoring sessions on their own accord or are referred by faculty.

Most sessions are based on the English curriculum in addition to any other assignments that students may be working on related to their program.

Our services are offered online through video calls on Microsoft Teams and on-campus at the Progress, Morningside, Downsview, Ashtonbee, and Story Arts Centre campuses.


Reporting to the Manager of the English Tutoring Centre (ETC), the English Tutor Lead assumes a coordination role for one of the designated service areas in the ETC.

They are responsible for mentoring the ETC tutors (formerly CAE tutors), and supporting the staff, and manager as well as performing all the duties of the English tutor position.

They also support registration at the start of each semester.

The ETC is part of the School of Advancement and reports to the Chair of English and ESL.


Responsibilities:


Designated Service Area Coordinating

  • Coordinate tutors' schedules and sessions.
  • Aid students with queries, walkin appointments, phone calls and facility use.
  • Develop and maintain repositories for tutoring sessions.
  • Register students for compressed classes at the start of each semester through Banner.
  • Coordinate with the ETC manager, assistant and other tutor leads to ensure smooth functioning of all centres.
  • Maintain facilities at specific ETC centre on campus.

One-on-one Tutoring

  • Provide initial assessment of a student's abilities in order to target specific areas of greatest need, such as essay writing, grammar, speaking, reading, APA, etc.
  • Deliver individualized oneonone tutoring sessions and group workshops.
  • Document tutoring session activities to facilitate continuity of student experience.
  • Offer support through active listening, questioning, explanation, examples and promoting independence.
  • Facilitate skill building activities for reading and oral and written communication.
  • Work collaboratively with students, faculty, administrators, and staff across the college.
  • Work effectively in a teambased environment.

Small Group Workshops

  • Prepare materials for different workshops, such as 'Let's Talk' and 'Let's Practice'.
  • Deliver workshops online and in person to small groups of students.

College-wide Events

  • Attend meetings and events related to the College such as Open House, Orientation, Start Smart, and HeadStart.

Other Activities

  • Participate in ETC tutor and team meetings.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by ETC Manager.

Qualifications/Experience:


  • 4year degree or equivalent in English, Linguistics, Psychology, Education or other related fields.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with English teaching and/or tutoring
  • Experience working in a postsecondary institution an asset.
  • Ontario TESL Certification (250 instructional hours, 30 hours of observation, and 20 hours of supervised practice teaching).
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated
