Position Overview
The
Hazardous Materials Services within VP Services is currently seeking a Full-time Regular
Hazardous Materials Technician.
The Hazardous Materials Technician reports to the Manager, Laboratory Safety. The Hazardous Materials Technician is responsible for the safe collection, transport, consolidation and shipment of hazardous materials. The Hazardous Materials Technician travels to a variety of University of Calgary locations that generate hazardous
waste. The work environment varies from an office setting to outdoors in all weather conditions.

All tasks are performed in strict compliance with university policies and procedures, as well as regulations imposed by various government agencies.

The normal work schedule is 35 hours per week from Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Call out response to low risk chemical spills may occasionally occur after normal working hours.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Minimizing risk to individuals and reducing any liability the University of Calgary may face through the disposal of hazardous materials used in teaching and research.
  • Providing appropriate information and education to the university community.
  • Providing professional collection and disposal services.
  • Strict adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Identifying and implementing strategies to ensure the best possible use of university resources through waste reduction and recycling/reuse initiatives.
  • Significant physical exertion moving heavy objects.

Qualifications / Requirements:


  • A Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry or a Chemical Technologist Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience and education should reflect knowledge of the properties of chemical families and their inherent hazards.
  • Strong situational awareness and adaptability under stressful circumstances is essential.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
  • Ability to perform physically demanding manual labour.
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection.
  • Previous experience driving a two ton cube truck or similar vehicle is an asset.
