  • Job SummaryThe Environmental Protection Division works to protect human and environmental health. The Air Quality Section (Assessments & Stewardship) is part of the Monitoring, Assessment and Stewardship team in Regional Operations Branch. Air Quality Section staff work to improve air quality through monitoring, assessment of air quality impacts, and technical support and guidance of air quality stewardship initiatives.


Under the general direction of the Section Head, the Air Quality Meteorologist is responsible/required to conduct technical review of new and existing sources of air contaminants; provide interpretation of ambient air quality data for environmental protection and air quality management; provide scientific and technical expertise on air quality issues and carrying out applied research programs aimed at understanding existing and emerging problems; formulating programs and alleviating air quality problems.

Duties include evaluating the impact on the environment of new or existing sources of air contaminants, providing expert advice on air quality complaints and making recommendations on ambient air quality monitoring requirements during permitting and environmental assessment processes.

This position is considered a specialist and scientific/technical expert on air quality.

This position is required to carry out or lead research, monitoring & reporting, assessment, airshed planning, dispersion modelling and other activities related to air quality impacts from new and existing sources.

This position also provides technical guidance and support to other ministry staff on air quality issues.


Job Requirements:


  • PhD in a related discipline (e

g:
atmospheric science, mathematics, chemistry, physics, epidemiology) AND one (1) year directly related experience in air quality management OR

  • Masters of Science in a related discipline AND one (1) year directly related experience in air quality management OR
  • Bachelor of Science in a related discipline AND three (3) years directly related experience, which includes three (3) years' experience in air quality management OR
  • Technical Diploma in a related discipline AND five (5) years directly related experience, which includes three (3) years' experience in air quality management
Directly related experience includes all of the following areas:

  • Designing data acquisition programs to assess impact of point and non-point sources of air contaminants
  • Providing interpretation and assessment of emissions and meteorology on ambient air quality for environmental management
  • Writing technical reports and memos
  • Performing analysis of air quality and meteorological data
  • Conducting impact assessments and air quality management
  • Preparing comprehensive reports, articles and scientific papers for publication or a balanced combination
  • Conducting air quality dispersion modelling
  • Data analysis and programming using R, Python or other languages
  • Public speaking and communication
  • Weather analysis and forecasting

About this Position:

This position can be based in any Natural Resource Sector office.
