At ESG, a Geophysical Specialist uses geophysical technical expertise to analyse and interpret data acquired using remote and automated monitoring systems and to relate the results in a meaningful way to operational challenges.

These two aspects of the role of an applied geophysicist are inseparable and of equal importance.


Geophysical Specialists at ESG work closely with several functional groups in different regions to ensure deadlines are met and client deliverables provide value and actionable insights.

This position requires an individual with a strong analytical and reasoning skills; someone who is capable of challenging the status quo to improve services and efficiencies for our clients.


Job Duties:


  • Deep geophysical data interpretation and analysis. This includes but is not limited to advanced microseismic analyses such as reentry protocol calibration, moment tensor inversions, threedimensional velocity model building, hazard analyses, passive seismic tomography, statistical and collective behavior of seismic events.
  • Integration of various data sets, including but not limited to seismic, geological / geophysical, geotechnical, tilt, fiber, production, survey (e.g., InSAR) data.
  • Relating the outcomes of geophysical interpretation and analyses to operational, geological and geomechanical challenges on client sites.
  • Application of geophysical principles and analysis to design appropriate monitoring systems for new and existing sites.
  • Microseismic data processing QC and review (arrival time picking, QC of event location, source parameter calculations).
  • System performance and health monitoring; working with other Geophysical Specialists and/or with the Data Processing team to optimize system parameters as needed.
  • Report writing.
  • Rostered oncall client assistance outside of normal working hours and days.
  • Participation in and (often) leading client meetings/presentations
  • Keeping up to date with current literature and developments in the applicable geophysical disciplines and rock mechanics.
  • Providing support to business development by giving technical sales presentations to potential clients, and input on potential analyses for existing clients.
  • Mentoring colleagues.
  • Traveling short term for client meetings and/or conferences.
  • Performing site visits of up to several weeks.

Requirements:


  • B.Sc or higher Mining or Geotechnical Engineering is preferred; B.Sc. Honours or higher in Geophysics, Physics, Earth Sciences with Physics and maths or related field will also be considered.
  • P.Geo, P.Eng, P.Geoph or the ability to obtain said designations is considered an asset
  • Proficiency in Python programming (or another, immediately transferrable scripting language) required.
  • Knowledge of the principles of mining / geotechnical engineering, geophysics and / or seismology.
  • Work experience in the mining sector (in particular underground mining) and / or field experience on mines is considered an advantage.
  • ESG conducts business in English. However, some knowledge of or proficiency in Spanish would be an advantage.
  • Well developed communication and generalised problemsolving skills.
  • Keen to continuously learn.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
