The
Infection Control (IPAC) Coordinator (_Full-Time Permanent_) is the IPAC lead and chairs the Infection Control Committee and the Outbreak Management Team.

The individual has education and experience in infection prevention and control practices including infectious diseases, cleaning and disinfection, data collection and trend analysis, reporting protocols and outbreak management.

The IPAC Coordinator reports to the Director of Care and the Administrator.




Responsibilities of IPAC Coordinator:


  • Develops, implements and promotes infection prevention and control practices training and education, including orientation, with residents, staff and families.
  • Maintains IPAC statistics including but not limited to type and frequency of infections in residents.
  • Reviews statistics to analyze trends and risks
  • Develops and implements prevention and control strategies to reduce identified risks
  • Maintains surveillance to monitor the effectiveness of prevention and control strategies and prevent potential outbreaks.
  • Provides a quarterly and annual summary report on statistics, analysis and strategies to Infection Control Committee.
  • In collaboration with the Infection Control Committee evaluates the quality and effectiveness of the Infection Control program annually.
  • Reviews, implements, and may participate in, infection control research (in consultation with the Infection Control Committee) to improve and update infection control strategies with evidenced based, best practice and prevailing practices.
  • In collaboration with IPAC Coordinators from other Conmed LTC homes, provides input into the review of the Infection Control Manual annually.
  • Manages staff immunization requirements including upon hire as well as ongoing
  • Manages Covid surveillance testing both routine and during outbreak
  • Manages the Hand Hygiene program for staff, residents, families and contractors
  • Manages outbreaks including notifying Public Health and Ministry of Health; convening the Outbreak Management Committee; implementing controls, precautions and required PPE; completing the outbreak summary report and evaluation of the control strategies for the Infection Control Committee and Joint Health and Safety.
  • Promotes immunization with staff, residents, volunteers and families which may include flu vaccine, pneumococcal vaccine, hepatitis vaccine and diphtheria/tetanus.
  • Conducts or arranges on site clinics for immunizations.
  • Ensures annual creatinine levels are taken to calculate residents' Tamiflu (antiviral) dosing.
  • Liaises with Ministry of Health, Public Health, Joint Health and Safety Committee and Ministry of Labour as indicated on infection related issues and occupational illnesses.
  • Participates in the Regional Infection Control Network in the region.
  • Complies with all relevant corporate policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required
The IPAC Coordinator is part of the Home' nursing management team.




Requirements of IPAC Coordinator:


  • Current registration in good standing as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Has successfully completed, or is enrolled in an Infection Prevention and Control program
  • Post-Graduate studies in Infection Prevention and Control
  • Further professional development in management and/or other healthcare courses such as gerontology, palliative care, foot care, skin care and wound management, Alzheimer's, dementia care and psychogeriatrics are an asset.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience working as a nurse in the longterm care sector
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience working as a nurse in a managerial or supervisory capacity in a health care setting
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interact with staff, residents, families, community professionals and various outside partners
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word/Excel/Publisher/Power Point)
  • Strong knowledge of the LTCHA and Regulations, Ministry Long Term Care Directives, the Registered Health Professionals Act, Narcotic Control Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation.
