The Recreation, Culture and Community Services Department is responsible for providing quality recreation, leisure, special events and cultural opportunities for all ages and abilities.

The Department is comprised of the Recreation Facility Operations, Recreation Programming, Recreation and Cultural Business Administration and the Community Services Divisions.

The Department serves as the City liaison to the City's cultural facilities and associated organizations including the Courtenay Recreational Association (CRA) and the Evergreen Club.

It also handles park bookings, special events, and long-range planning for parks, recreation, culture and community services.


The Recreation Facility Operations Division is responsible for the provision and use of indoor and outdoor Recreation facilities within the City of Courtenay including the Native Sons Hall, Florence Filberg Centre, Lewis Recreation Centre, LINC Youth Centre, Courtenay & District Memorial Outdoor Pool, park fieldhouses & sport fields.

These facilities are used for internal recreation programs, community, rentals and special events.

Staff within this Division include Reception staff who provide office administration, reception, facility bookings and program registration support to the public.

Custodial staff perform facility cleaning and basic maintenance and also provide support for program and community use of the facilities.

Wellness Centre staff provide supervision and personal training services and seasonal Aquatic staff provide outdoor pool supervision and programming.

The Opportunity


The
Assistant Manager of Recreation Facility Operations plays a key leadership role in the supervision and planning of the Wellness Centre, Courtenay and District Memorial Outdoor Pool, and outdoor sports and park facilities and fields.

The position will be the main point of contact for community organizations accessing outdoor facilities and will lead the implementation of allocation policies and practices.


Participates in the planning, development and implementation of recreation services and strategies; manages outdoor recreation facilities including the outdoor pool, use of parks, sports fields and fieldhouses.

Managers the Lewis Centre Wellness Centre; manages staff and volunteers; negotiates and administers recreation service and event agreements and permits.

Assists with management and leadership of overall Facility Operations division, including reception and custodial staff.

***- Degree in Recreation or related discipline from a recognized educational institution.

  • Current First Aid Standard Level
  • Industry and CPR Level A & C or willingness to obtain upon hiring
  • Pool Operators Certificate (or willingness to obtain upon hiring)
  • Considerable years) experience in the development, implementation and administration of recreation and community programs with some experience in managing facility operations, including wellness centre and aquatics
  • Considerable experience with building and maintaining relationships with community organizations and partners
  • Sound experience in supervising employees, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of recreation and community service needs and management techniques
  • Considerable knowledge of philosophies, principles, and practices of community recreation program & event development, implementation and delivery
  • Experience in outdoor sport facility allocation, sport partnership development
  • Sound knowledge of public facility regulations, bylaws and risk management practices
  • Sound knowledge and background in budget preparation and control
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, presentation, facilitation, public relations, negotiation, problem solving, decision making, planning, organizational, time management, leadership and general management skills
  • Strong office computer skills
  • Experience in using Active Net recreation software or similar registration software
  • Ability to plan, assign and direct the work of personnel and lead, coach, and motivate staff and volunteers in a team environment
  • Ability to deal effectively with representatives of government agencies, community and user groups, general public, and City staff
  • Criminal Records Clearance
  • Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License
