Recreation, Parks, and Culture is seeking an Equipment Operator I for our Outdoor Premier Areas and Skating team.

In this role, you would contribute to the maintenance and improvement of outdoor recreational areas by safely operating a variety of self-propelled small equipment, performing manual labour, and training other staff in the safe operation of equipment.


Responsibilities:


  • Operate selfpropelled equipment including a variety of trucks, trailers, rideon mowers, tractors, skid steers, gaspowered and electric hand tools, line painters, and a variety of small equipment such as string trimmers, push mowers, generators, drills, and backpack sprayers in a safe and efficient manner
  • Monitor, maintain, and service equipment to ensure it is in proper working order and meets operating and safety standards
  • Use and share knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Regulations and Code, follow safety guidelines, identify potential hazardous situations, and adapt appropriately
  • Assist Operator II and Team Lead positions by training other staff members in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Display accountability when providing direction, training, and overseeing the work of small crews in the completion of assigned tasks, and assist with other related duties

Qualifications and Skills

  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions and interact in a positive manner with internal and external customers
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety and WHMIS regulations
  • Ability to maintain mental alertness while performing duties often with frequent interruptions and under time constraints; unscheduled overtime may be required
  • Ability to organize a crew to perform basic job functions efficiently, promote team building
  • General mechanical knowledge
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent with two years related experience in outdoor operations
  • Turf management, construction, or sports field maintenance, landscaping and irrigation experience
  • Previous experience operating, servicing, and maintaining trucks, trailers, rideon mowers, tractors, skid steers and/or small equipment

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's licence and submission of a 5year Driver's Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification required prior to start date
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability and willingness to perform duties in inclement and adverse weather conditions Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
