POSITION:
Early Childhood Educator


REPORTS TO:
Director and Supervisor


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Twoyear Early Childhood Education diploma or equivalent approved by the provincial licensing process
  • Registered Member of the College of Early Childhood Educators
  • Current Criminal Reference Check for Vulnerable Sector with no concerning findings
  • Valid Standard First Aid and Child CPR Level C
  • An uptodate immunization record
  • Working knowledge of The Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA)
  • Working knowledge of the Early Learning and Care Assessment for Quality Improvement (ELCAQI)
  • Working knowledge of How Does Learning Happen? (HDLH) Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years
  • Must have a clear understanding of the emergent curriculum as well as working knowledge of the ELECT document
  • Must have a Certificate in "Workers Health and Safety in 4 Steps", WHMIS Training and AODA Training
  • Willing to obtain Food Handlers Certificate

  • Take a leadership role in planning and implementing an ageappropriate program, along with other staff under the supervision of the Director/Supervisor.
  • The program should comply with The Child Care and Early Years Act and Early Learning and Care Assessment for Quality Improvement, and be in compliance with the policies and philosophy developed by the centre.
  • Follow the policies, procedures and program statement of the centre
  • Provide a physically safe and emotionally supportive environment showing sensitivity to the individual needs of children in all aspects of development.
  • Acts as a lead staff when working with supply staff.
  • Maintains positive relationships with colleagues, children and family, school personnel and community.
  • Withrow Childcare Centre is open during the hours of 7:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Monday through Friday.
    While every attempt is made for staff to have regular schedules and program, the nature of the job requires staff to be flexible about shifts and program assignments. Summer, March Break, PA Days, etc. will affect staff schedules and job responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

PROGRAM PLANNING AND CREATIVITY:


Plan, implement and review children's experiences in accordance with the centre's philosophy and program goals

  • Prepares and presents a weekly program plan, having used a variety of different resources and materials, as well as drawn from their observations of the children, to the Supervisor by Thursday, the week prior.
  • Provide a daily balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, and individual/group activities for children.
  • Supervises children in free play and guiding them in their physical, social, cognitive and emotional development in accordance with the philosophy of the program.
  • Assess program supplies and materials needed prior to implementation of the program.
  • Treat all children with respect and dignity.
  • Establish and carry out daily schedule that incorporates childdirected activity, care routines and transition times.
  • Organize space, equipment and materials prior to activities.
  • Assist children in expressing themselves by listening and responding with questions or comments that extend conversations.
  • Use a variety of teaching techniques including modeling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, reinforcing and transitioning.
  • Setup daily routines to take advantage of learning opportunities.
  • Plan and carry out experiences that promote children's understanding of their own and other's culture and value system.
  • Plan and carry out activities that promote problemsolving play (pretend play, creative and constructive play, and games with rules).
  • Organize physical and social environment to extend and expand childdirected play experiences.
  • Recognize and build on emergent and early literacy and numeric activities. Encourage children's representation of their experiences.
  • Represent and document children's activities photos, display of the children's drawings, artwork and projects.
  • Maintain daily log of relevant information.
  • Provide experiences and play materials that actively promote antibias and nonsexist interactions and attitudes.
  • Participate in short and long term program planning.
  • Plan and supervise special events for P.A days, March Break and summer (if applicable).

TEACHING STYLES AND PRACTICES:


Individualize the curriculum

  • Implement a program geared to the needs of individual children with concerns for their interests, special talents, individual styles and pace of learning.
  • Work with resource staff and other specialists as required to plan, carry out and review individual program plans.
  • Work with children in a group while retaining sensitivity to each child's individual needs.
  • Seek out opportunities to recognize and celebrate new developmental achievements.
  • Encourage and assist each child in carrying out daily routines.
  • Provide daily opportunities for each child to choose to be alone.
