NATURE OF THE WORK

  • The principal and customary work of the employee in this employment class consists in assisting the teaching personnel in the preparation, presentation, supervision and evaluation of laboratory work, field work and workshops. Specifically, the Biomedical Laboratory Technician assists the teaching personnel in the Biomedical Laboratory Technology Program.


  • RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide feedback regarding student's professional and technical skills and performance to the teacher.
  • Supervise students in the lab to ensure proper use of instruments.
  • Supervise proper technical methodology to ensure:
  • Appropriate technical skills are demonstrated for student learning
  • Safety regulations are adhered to with respect to the handling of hazardous biological materials
  • Physically hazardous materials are used correctly


Laboratory Responsibilities- Maintain an up-to-date preparation book, copy of exercises, a list of materials and solution recipes for each laboratory course.


  • Prepare student seating plans and assign microscopes and drawers each term.
  • Discuss upcoming lab exercises with teachers.
  • Prepare and shut down the labs according to the guidelines.
  • Transport equipment between laboratories and the storeroom.
  • Assist with the development of new laboratory exercises.
  • Study the operation and utilization of new instruments, in collaboration with teachers.
  • Follow protocols for general maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Deals with unanticipated problems with procedures, reagents, and equipment and troubleshoots and repairs, as necessary.
  • Contact service and technicians for regular (preventative) and emergency repairs.
  • Contact other departments within the College for services, as required.
  • Deal with sales representatives from various companies concerning new products and equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies, and places orders as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by supervisor.

Length of the contract:
May 15, 2023 to May 14, 2024


Requirements:


  • QUALIFICATIONS
  • To have a diploma of college studies (DEC) in an appropriate specialty or a diploma or an attestation of studies which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.


  • CONDITIONS

  • Medical Laboratory Technology certification, an asset, due to the nature of the specimens handled, i.e. body fluids (blood, sputum, feces, urine, etc.), body tissues (heart, lung, intestine, etc.)
  • Membership in good standing with the Ordre professionnel des technologistes médicaux du Québec (OPTMQ) is required for blood drawing purposes, an asset.
  • Canadian Society Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification, an asset.
  • Advanced oral and written English communication skills (testing may be required);
  • Basic oral French communication skills (testing may be required);
  • Basic level Word and Excel (testing may be required)
  • Ability to work efficiently as part of team, and to work independently when needed
  • Good organizational skills
