Your role
CBC Toronto is looking for an experienced journalist to fill the key role of weekend assignment Associate Producer. This is a part-time (2 day), permanent position.


You are passionate about everything that makes this city what it is - its people, its neighbourhoods, its culture, its politics, its business.

You are deeply connected to communities across the GTA and have a passion for sharing their stories.


As Associate Producer, reporting to the Senior Producer of Assignment, you will work with the weekend assignment producer, program leads, digital journalists, as well as videographers and video producers to deliver news coverage in the Greater Toronto Area.


You will have a grasp of current trends in news programming - on digital and broadcast platforms - as well as emerging tools and technology.

You are able to write and edit audiovisuals for broadcast platforms. You will have a clear understanding of CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices.

You love breaking news and are able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances during a busy news day. Excellent writing and chase abilities are essential.

This is a collaborative work environment, so a team player with first-rate communications skills is a must. You will need to juggle and prioritize multiple stories and tasks, and to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with at least 3 years of practical and relevant experience.
  • Extensive experience working in an assignment role.
  • Strong contributor of ideas, stories and treatments.
  • The ability to plan ahead and effectively organize news coverage for multiple platforms and to react to breaking news as it arises and assign resources in collaboration with others at the regional and national level.
  • Passionate about exploring the diverse communities that make up the GTA and their stories, issues and ideas.
  • Proven track record of ensuring a diversity of voices is reflected in storytelling.
  • Personal experience with pitching and producing stories on underrepresented communities.
  • Innovative with programming and ideas. Curious, incisive and critical thinker.
  • Knowledge of changing audience trends and best practices, standards and social media.
  • Uptodate contact network.
  • Knowledge of production methods in the field and newsroom.
  • Dalet and Media Central editing skills.
  • Knowledge of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • High level of organization and productivity.
  • Strong & enthusiastic team player with good communication skills.
  • Initiative taker, with ability to be productive in individual and team settings.
  • Able to work flexible hours.
