Position Description:


purpose


Under the direction of the Principal or Supervisor, the purpose of this position is to oversee the operation of a food service facility within an academic setting.


accountability

  • Overseeing the efficient and cost effective operation of a food service facility;
  • Ensuring that high standards of safety, health, hygiene and sanitation are observed in the preparation, handling, and serving of food;
  • Preparing and overseeing the preparation of foods in a timely manner;
  • Maintaining accurate records of all transactions, according to CBE guidelines;
  • Effectively training and monitoring the performance of food service providers, under the direction of the Supervisor;
  • Overseeing the cafeteria staff and monitoring their performance to ensure that CBE guidelines for food and handling cash are adhered to; and
  • Supporting an effective and positive learning environment for students by interacting positively with them and modelling appropriate behaviour.

major responsibilities

  • Prepares a variety of foods in a cost effective manner that fosters choices governed by the guidelines established by the CBE. Ensures that high standards of health, hygiene and sanitation are observed in the preparation, handling, and serving of food. Ensures that proper cleanup methods are utilized to prevent injury (e.g. spills) and contamination.
  • Oversees the ordering, purchasing and/ or delivery of food from approved suppliers. Maintains an awareness of pricing trends. Tracks inventory and ensures proper storage of goods.
  • Maintains accurate records of receipts and expenditures, according to financial guidelines. Ensures the accuracy of invoices of items received, that prices are correct, and that credit notes have been issued when necessary. Forwards the invoices to administration office for processing.
  • Organizes and deploys food services staff under the direction of the Supervisor. Effectively trains them and monitors the quality of their work. Reports unacceptable behaviour to the Supervisor.
  • Reviews monthly reports generated by the administration office, and in consultation with the Supervisor, assesses whether the profit is in keeping with the goals of the operation. Makes suggestions to the Supervisor about changes to prices, menus and improved business practices
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

qualifications
Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma
  • Certificate in Safe Food Handling
  • One year of related experience in the food services industry
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge about food services including cooking, cost effective menu preparation, pricing, purchasing, and basic record keeping
  • Standard First Aid/ CPR is an asset
  • Possession of very good interpersonal skills and a strong customer service orientation
  • Adaptable to the needs of the students/ patrons, and possess the ability to be creative with food and menus
  • Willingness to upgrade knowledge and skills by taking advantage of inservice training opportunities
  • Ability to effectively supervise others is necessary, as is the ability to work well with limited supervision in this position of trust
  • Welldeveloped organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to appreciate and effectively relate to and communicate with students and staff
  • Personal suitability.
