About Us

Purpose of the Position


Under the general direction of the Operations Manager, the Yard & Maintenance Specialist (YMS) is a multi-disciplinary position that will be responsible for train operations within the Maintenance & Storage Facility (MSF) and be the main point of contact for the Finch West Light Rail Transit (FWLRT) help desk.


The incumbent will perform a variety of routine activities which include utilizing a communication-based train control system to direct Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) movements in and out of the shop, staging areas, and the hand off platform as well as monitor, record and assign any maintenance requests as received on a variety of rail transit operations and maintenance issues.

The incumbent will also be responsible for the monitoring of rail and security systems through a Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system responding appropriately in accordance with established procedures with various maintenance personnel to meet daily revenue service demands.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Plans, coordinates and moves trains within the FWMSF utilizing a communicationsbased train control panel to meet scheduled LRT service and vehicle maintenance schedules (exterior train wash, weekly and daily interior cleans, daily LRT service inspections, LRT preventative and corrective maintenance).
  • Delivers and receives service trains to the Hand Off Platform as per scheduled runout/runin times. Coordinates the yard and mainline interface with the TTC's Transit Control personnel.
  • Coordinates with vehicle maintenance personnel to position and move trains through various maintenance facilities.
  • Maintains a staged, organized storage yard allowing for clear and unimpeded movement of service ready trains and trains requiring maintenance.
  • Responds to emergency situations by adjusting yard and vehicle operations, in coordination with emergency, vehicle and infrastructure personnel, to mitigate any service disruptions and expedite recovery operations. Handles all emergency and routine situations in an efficient, effective and professional manner.
  • Must be able to attain and maintain LRT Yard Operator qualification.
  • Answer Help Desk calls within the allotted timeframe, which includes recording the call, asking relevant questions to ensure the correct assignment of the relevant Service Description Event, KPM, response, Rectification time, and appropriate maintenance response.
  • Coordinates with infrastructure maintenance personnel to facilitate maintenance activities and maintenance vehicle movement during the yard maintenance windows. Facilitates and coordinates EMSF worker protection areas.
  • Dispatch appropriate personnel to investigate and effect repairs, as required.
  • Monitor, update and respond to active Service Requests commensurate with the appropriate KPM's and ensure response and rectification times are met and issues are fully resolved.
  • Answer, coordinate and direct response to help calls.
  • Deal with issues and incidents that may be sensitive and confidential.
  • Monitor critical systems and coordinating mitigation responses in accordance with established protocols.
  • Monitor and dispatch of security response, arrange security escorts, identify, report and document security issues inside the MSF.
  • Escalates incidents to the Operations Manager.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:


  • Completion of a postsecondary school education, such as a Community College Diploma or University degree in a technical related discipline or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent, such as engineering, mathematics, information technology.
  • Knowledge of the rail transit industry.
  • Familiarity with the vehicle and infrastructure systems that comprise a light rail transit system.
  • Thorough knowledge of transit operations, including rail yard operations, train control system operation and interfaces, emergency operating rules, procedures and regulations, power isolation procedures, and service adjustments to manage the LRV Yard Control.
  • Incumbent must have an ability to perform within a "control centre" environment, including potential emergency situations.
  • Proven experience working in a high pressure "Control Centre" environment and dealing with emergencies.
  • Working knowledge of computerized databases and the MS Office Suite, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Detailed knowledge and previous work experience with maintenance management, a maintenance management system, Help Desk or Control Centre environment is an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in the English language.
  • Excellent customer service skills with both internal staff and external clients.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong decisionmaking, effective problem solving and risk management skills.
  • Must have effective interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively as part a team.
