Makerspace Lab Technician


The Makerspace Lab Technician is responsible for overseeing the Makerspace and Innovation Shop, which is a collaborative workspace where students and faculty can gather to create, invent, and learn using various tools and technologies.

Reporting to the Manager, Digital Skills Services, the Makerspace Lab Technician's primary responsibilities are to manage the Innovation Shop space use, engage students and faculty, provide training and workshops while also managing the equipment and supply inventory.


In carrying out these responsibilities, the incumbent will be at ease establishing connections and partnerships with various departments across the college and with specific faculty who require space for projects with their students.

They are also responsible for keeping records of all activities through usage statistics and user feedback.

Overall, the Makerspace Lab Technician ensures that the Makerspace environment is conducive to creativity, innovation, and learning for its users.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:

Space and Equipment - Makerspace & Innovation Shop

  • As the Makerspace & Innovation Shop usage evolves to incorporate facultyled projects from across the college, the Makerspace Lab Technician works with faculty to schedule projects in the Innovation Shop for space and any Makerspace equipment utilization.
  • Work with faculty to ensure that layout and setup for any specific workshop, semester long project or other event determined.
  • Ensure the equipment and space is organized, clean and always complies with all health & safety regulations.
  • Utilize creative artistic software to create digital files for workshops and special projects.
  • Ensure the supply inventory is maintained and that special projects supplies are ordered and/or prepared in advance of any event/project/workshop.
  • Maintain equipment, safety procedures, first aid certification, Material Data Sheets, safety training, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) personal and for customers.
  • Provide Makerspace & Innovation Shop orientation/tours to promote services, equipment use and digital literacy through oneonone, group sessions including students, faculty, staff, administration and student recruitment activities.

Workshops & Demonstrations

  • Provide creative assistance, guidance and support for projects while fostering a collaborative and inclusive community environment.
  • Design, develop and help train students on MakerSpace equipment such as 3D Printing, Laser Cutting, Vinyl Cutting, UV Printing, and other technologies as acquired.
  • Plan and facilitate training sessions and workshops on the safe and effective use of Makerspace tools and equipment.
  • Facilitate creative brainstorming with users using Design Thinking methodologies and tools.
  • Design Makeandtake workshops for students to an introduction to Makerspace activities.
  • Promote and market the departmental services, including participation Open Houses and other events.

Documentation and Evaluation

  • Manage and control Makerspace specific cocurricular record certifications.
  • Record usage data, nature of workshops and customers course/program/school it originates from as well as reporting usage data on various Academic Technologies such as 3D printing, laser engraving, printing, CNC and other technologies.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance the webpages and blogs that feature the Makerspace & Innovation Shop.

Other duties as assigned

  • Evening shifts may be required for certain workshops.

QUALIFICATIONS:


The successful applicant must have:

  • A minimum of three year postsecondary degree or diploma in Creative Industries or Trades.
  • A minimum of three years of practical experience with creative software, graphic user interfaces (GUI), raster image processing (RIP) software.
  • Practical experience with machine tools, power tools, hand tools, CNC machines, machine setup, machine maintenance.
