Roads Summer Student

Frankville, ON (North Leeds Patrol)


Position Summary:


Reporting to and under the direction of the Patrol Supervisor, the Roads Summer Student will join a Roads Department Crew and will be responsible for a variety of tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the Roads systems.

Education, Certification & Licenses

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class "G" driver's licence and the use of a reliable vehicle is required to travel to various work sites throughout Leeds and Grenville.
  • Physically able to perform tasks involving manual labour.
  • Experience operating hand tools and power tools and motorized equipment, including lawn mowers and weed trimmers.
  • Confirmation of current enrollment in and returning to full time postsecondary studies. Civil Engineering/Civil Engineering Technology is not mandatory but will be considered an asset.
  • Work boots with both a protective toe cap and puncture resistant sole (green patch/CSA approved) are required. (All other safety equipment will be provided.)
  • Computer software knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office.

Experience

  • Past experience with construction or inspection is not mandatory, but will be considered an asset.

Knowledge

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook) at the intermediate level. (tested)

Skills & Abilities

  • Physically able to perform tasks involving heavy labour under extreme temperatures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship skills both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated ability to respect the confidentiality of information and exercise tact and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide guidance and advice to others on a regular basis.
  • Teamoriented and skilled in working within a collaborative team environment.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

Activity 1 (approximately 10%)

  • Construction inspections under the supervision of technical staff. Assisting technical staff with Field Surveying using total station, laser level, and GPS.
Activity 2 (approximately 40%)

  • Completes lawn mowing, weed trimming, basic maintenance on grounds and buildings.
Activity 3 (approximately 40%)

  • Performs manual labour to assist with a wide variety of road maintenance and construction jobs, including cold patching.
Activity 4 (approximately 10%)

  • Provide traffic control in accordance with Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7.
Activity 5 (approximately 100%)

  • Other related duties as requested and required

***- Performs the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Federal and Provincial Legislation; Municipal Acts, By-Laws and Operational and Human Resource policies and codes of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville.

  • Ensures a high level of respect for confidentiality for both the organization as a whole and staff as per the Municipal _Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA)._
  • Protects own health and health and safety of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and attending all relevant inservices regarding occupational health and safety. Follows all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Health and Safety Act.
  • Adhere to applicable legislation
  • As set out in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville's Emergency Plan, perform duties upon the declaration of an emergency.

Physical Skills:


  • Position requires considerable visual and auditory attention with attention to detail.
  • Regular use of office equipment with some coordination and speed required where work operations are not constant and there is choice of workflow.
  • Position requires heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.

Working Conditions:


  • Mostly outdoor work, in all weather conditions, including extreme heat.
  • Work involves frequent interruptions to respond to demands.
  • Work outside of normal business hours to meet organizational needs as required (mínimal).
  • Infrequent overnight trips for training.
