Minimum Qualifications:


  • A recently completed PhD degree is a requirement for this position.
  • Experience planning, organizing and tracking workshops or smallgroup events is required.
  • Experience with onetoone writing instruction, and a scholarly approach to onetoone writing instruction, including familiarity with best practices, are required.
  • Experience teaching academic writing in courses or workshops is required.
  • Experience teaching graduate students is required.
  • Experience with writing groups, either as a facilitator or as a participant, is required. An academic background in Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, or Social Sciences
-or relevant experience working extensively with upper-level undergraduate or graduate student writing in these fields is required

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience and training in working with diverse students, including experience and training in secondlanguage instruction at the university level, are assets.
  • Experience in teaching writing online, particularly in a synchronous teaching context, is an asset.
  • They will also have a demonstrated commitment to fostering equity, diversity and inclusion.


CTL's Graduate Writing Support program favours applicants with a long-term interest in the three main aspects of the position: providing writing instruction for graduate students (especially in STEM or Social Science fields), facilitating group writing events, and developing/implementing workshops on writing-related topics.


Description of duties:

- organize, plan, and facilitate Just Writes, weekly in-person, group writing events that offer a congenial, distraction-free space for writing and the social support of other graduate students. During Just Writes, the instructor will open and close events, facilate informal goal-setting and check-ins, answer questions, and meet with participants one-to-one on an as-needed basis.
- on request from graduate course instructors or departments, develop and present (or co-present) customized workshops on specific aspects of writing and communication for graduate students, including
- develop or compile instructional materials related to graduate student writing
- build relationships with departments, administrators in UTSC graduate departments—DPES, Psychology, Management (MAccFin)

  • Liaise with Vice-Dean Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
  • Track attendance at Just Write and 1:1; compile a short report at the end of each term or contract describing work done.


The instructor will work independently and in communication with the Coordinator of CTL Writing Support and with campus partners providing graduate programming.

For Summer 2024, one-to-one instruction may be on-campus or online, depending on student and instructor availability. We anticipate that all Just Writes will be held on campus. Workshops may be on-campus or online, depending on the needs of the unit requesting the workshop.

Instructors should have access to a stable, high-speed internet line, a computer with a working webcam and microphone and a quiet workspace.
