The Transit Infrastructure Field Technician is responsible for the installation and maintenance of Halifax Transit bus stop and transit facility infrastructure, as well as the operation of vehicles and equipment related to maintenance.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Transit Infrastructure, Planning & Customer Engagement (PACE), Halifax Transit, the Technician is required to balance priorities, directly coordinate with other members of the PACE team, most notably the Transit Technicians and work independently on a variety of tasks including time sensitive construction related requirements.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Travel to various locations around the Halifax Transit network to perform work duties, including, but not limited to: Signage maintenance (repair/removal/installation of sign posts and signage); identifying and safety maintenance to bus stops; and setup temporary signage and wheels (used to identify closed/temporary stops), install miscellaneous items such as benches, bike racks, trash cans, etc;
  • Assists in the design and preparation of bus and terminal signs;
  • Cleans up broken shelters glass, addresses immediate safety concerns/repairs and removes graffiti as required;
  • Responsible for performing route inspections, problem solve cost and time effective maintenance solutions and resolve work problems independently to ensure transit infrastructure is not missing/damaged and recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality;
  • Maintains equipment on service truck, requisition materials and supplies and inventory of items related to job functions;
  • Establish methods to meet work schedules and coordinate work activities with Halifax Transit Infrastructure Technicians, Halifax Transit Operations, etc.;
  • Complete daily work log, prepare work progress reports and enter data or file attachment updates to the Software as a Service (SaaS) solution; and
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:


Education & Experience

  • College diploma or professional certificate in Carpentry, Welding, Industrial Mechanical, or equivalent program.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working in an environment that utilizes carpentry, welding, light shop equipment.
  • Experience in operating shop equipment (e.g. welding tools, hand tools, air tools).
  • Knowledge of Halifax Transit service (e.g. Bus Stops, Shelters, Terminals and bus routes) is an asset;
  • Acceptable Driver's Abstract; and
  • Must have and maintain a valid N.S. Class 5 driver's license with airbrake endorsement.

Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:


  • Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety standards and practices;
  • Provincial Traffic Control Certification and Signage Course or ability to successfully complete;
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements;
  • Ability to operate hand tools and power tools used in removal, installation, and repair of transit infrastructure, including welding equipment, to measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of lightweight steel, aluminum, and other materials as related to maintenance requirements;
  • Ability to operate/lift/carry pry bar, jack hammer, sledge hammer (weighing up to 55lbs), operate hydraulic lift to maneuver heavy wheels and use push/pull forces to tip over sign bases (weighing up to 88 lbs.)
  • Climb a ladder up to 10 ft.
  • Working knowledge or ability to learn Microsoft Office Suite, ReGIS and other software as required to perform duties and responsibilities
  • Ability to independently problem solve and make onsite decisions
  • Capable and willing to preform duties and responsibilities inside and outside in varying weather conditions

Permanent, Full Time


HOURS OF WORK:
Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm.


SALARY:
Salary as per the ATU 508 Collective Agreement - $35.08 per hour
