Your opportunity:

The Director, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) works collaboratively with academic, administrative, and student leaders to develop and implement initiatives aimed at advancing equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) within the learning and working environments across the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering (FASE). With a comprehensive understanding of a range of diversity issues and resources related to the protected grounds as identified in the Ontario Human Rights Code, the incumbent educates, informs and advances principles and values of equity, diversity and inclusivity through training, outreach and the provision of advice and information.

Reporting to the Dean in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering and to the University's Executive Director, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, (dotted line), the Director acts as a key point of contact and expert resource for staff, faculty and students across FASE and works closely with FASE's HR Offices, the Case Manager, Community Safety & Divisional Support, the University's equity directors to ensure appropriate and timely resolution of reported incidents. The incumbent provides strategic guidance and advice to the Dean's Academic and Administrative Leadership teams on matters of policy interpretation and practice concerning accessibility, diversity, equity, inclusion, freedom of speech and freedom of expression for staff, students, faculty, student associations or clubs and visitors.

The Director works on related professional development, educational and mentorship initiatives for all levels of the FASE community, in collaboration with staff and academic administrators in the Office of Dean, the HR offices and various FASE academic units. The incumbent represents FASE in various forums, including within U of T, and the broader community, and also coordinates and co-chairs (as assigned) meetings of FASE, EDI committee and its various working groups.

The Director is also responsible for identifying gaps and making recommendations for improving EDI practices.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate degree in a relevant area of study, preferably with a focus on human rights, diversity, equity and inclusion or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

Minimum five (5) years of professional experience in, and understanding of, complex issues related to equity and diversity as they relate to both the learner experience and the workplace. A thorough understanding of diversity frameworks is essential. Familiarity with the role of human resources and equity within the organizational structure. Proven experience as an organizational leader, particularly around initiatives that promote diversity, access, and inclusion. Demonstrated experience in bringing about positive change in the field of EDI.

Experience designing and delivering educational programs is required. Experience working within a post-secondary context is strongly preferred.

Skills:

Highly proficient computer skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Internet research skills. Must maintain a thorough understanding of issues related to EDI, intersectionality, and protected grounds as outlined in the Ontario Human Rights Code. An open and creative approach to problem solving and a willingness to refer issues with a collaborative and problem- solving mindset. Ability to understand and enable diverse viewpoints and approaches to achieve Faculty and University EDI goals. An innovative and strategic thinker with a broad vision for the role of diversity in achieving institutional excellence. Demonstrated superior judgement, tact and political acuity required to address sensitive topics and effectively manage relationships. Must maintain a thorough understanding of relevant law and policy, including the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Statement on Prohibited Discrimination and Discriminatory Harassment, the Guideline for Employees on Concerns and Complaints Regarding Prohibited Discrimination and Discriminatory Harassment, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the Code of Student Conduct.

Other:

Excellent interpersonal, communication, facilitation and mediation skills. Collaborative and team-oriented leadership style. Ability to make appropriate connections and build synergies. Demonstrated experience and competence in developing and delivering training sessions to groups. Ability to engage with various stakeholders and members of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering community, and connect and build rapport with learner, faculty and staff groups. Ability to work independently and within a team environment. Ability to operate at the strategic, policy and operational levels. Highly developed organizational and program development skills. Demonstrated analytical ability and ability to use initiative and strong judgment in decision- making.
