Water Meter Reader (Regular Part Time)

Finance Department

POSITION FUNCTION
Read and record water consumption figures from domestic and commercial water meters.


KEY DUTIES


Follow an established route to read and record water consumption readings from commercial and domestic water meters; record figures onto an electronic data recorder, laptop or meter book and download data as required; identify and re-program incorrect meter measurement settings using a laptop when appropriate; review data for abnormal usage and follow-up with homeowners to determine source of inaccuracy; respond to time sensitive calls for service; operate a vehicle to and from inspection routes and to respond to special requests for meter readings.

Record leaking or damaged water meters and hazardous conditions found on sidewalks and report problems to appropriate section.

Identify water leakage and advise appropriate City personnel or advise home owner of their responsibility for repairs; maintain access to meters by bailing out water or debris filled meter holes; and advising consumers of related bylaw.

Turn water supply on and off as requested by supervisor.

Perform related duties where qualified.


INDEPENDENCE
Work is performed according to established routine or assigned by supervisor.

Work is reviewed by supervisor.

Problems such as high consumption readings, leaking services or meters are referred to supervisor.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

Lift and pull heavy steel water meter covers. (frequent)

Walk approximately 9 km per day. (frequent)


Mental Effort:

Deal with complaints and negative comments. (rare)


Visual/Auditory Effort:

Focus on a variety of source data and computer for short periods. (frequent)

Focus on meter readings for short periods (often)


Work Environment:

Work outside in all weather conditions. (continuous)

Work in close proximity to moving traffic. (rare)


KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Organize and prioritize work.

Working level operation of City word processing and specialty software.

Understand and carry out job related instructions.

Use small hand tools.

Keep accurate records.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.

Work safely.


QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
High school graduation.

Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.


Experience:

Not required.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.


Work schedule:
Monday to Friday, (17.5 hour work week)


$31.78 per hour, Pay Grade 5
