Description

Under the direction of the Director of Detail Design, the Manager, Outfit Detail Design provides detail design capability and input in engineering lifecycle phases of projects including bid solicitation, design preparations, project and procurement planning, technical and project risk management, detail design execution, production support and in service detail design support.

These responsibilities ensure that the goals and objectives of engineering projects are accomplished within the prescribed engineering plans, schedules and budgets and that the work is in complete satisfaction of the requirements.

The Manager is responsible for developing and maintaining applicable detail design capabilities (people, process and tools).


The Manager works with the various Project Engineering Managers to develop resource plans and assign suitably qualified and experienced resource to projects either from their department or procured as design services from external contractors.


This role is also responsible for liaising with external partner design teams to ensure that the detail design deliverables produced are in accordance with the engineering input information and the production design standards and procedures.


Duties/Accountabilities
Technical

  • Provides comprehensive leadership expertise by reviewing proposals, and scopes of work. Provides support to establish budgets and schedules to ensure contract design requirements are met.
  • Provides discipline expertise to define program technical requirements, prepare designs, evaluate new technologies, develop solutions, lead design teams to produce integrated 3D models and MI packages, and support programs through production, test, verification, and inservice support.
  • Communicates department issues and strategic initiatives to the Director regularly.
Programmatic

  • Coordinate with Project Engineering Managers to assemble engineering teams.
  • Maintains awareness of design issues and change within projects and communicates as necessary to Director.
  • In support of the Technical Authority ensure engineering efforts and project/product safety are planned and executed in accordance with company policies, procedures, processes, and best practices.
  • Communicates with engineering subcontractors to establish detail design requirements for the purpose of meeting project schedule.
Departmental

  • Maintains a resource and capability plan for their area of responsibility.
  • Builds team capability by training and developing others in order to ensure current and future team effectiveness.
  • Provides mentoring and technical advice to subordinate resources in the department in support of departmental replacement and succession planning.
  • Identifies improvements in processes, tools, and training that can offer increased efficiency, responsiveness, and product quality.
  • Works with other Engineering Managers to identify current and future required skills. Attracts and hires personnel with required experience, capabilities, education, and certifications.
  • Represents the company to industry to develop understanding the client involvement in global shipbuilding, in service support and continue to build our reputation.

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) and 10 years postsecondary experience of which 4 years includes supervision of subordinates is required, or
  • A minimum of 3 years of shipyard experience
  • 5 years proven experience working on projects involving diverse stakeholders.
  • Eligibility for P.Eng. EGBC status is preferred.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Sophisticated technical knowledge and engineering skills.
  • Knowledge of EVM methodology.

  • Demonstrates ability to work independently to develop solutions to complex technical problems.
  • Strong analytical skills to capture and analyze/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as an integral part of the collective analysis/synthesis process.
  • Strong technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports.
  • Knowledge of financial accounting, purchasing and management systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of 3D CAD software, document control systems and databases.
  • Good organizational skills including the ability to maintain organization in a changing environment, multitask and establish priorities.
  • Availability and willingness to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the Employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
