Job Summary


The Area Controller is directly responsible for the establishment of financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems and shall be responsible for the supervision of general accounting, accounts receivable, collection and payroll for two hotels.

The Area Controller shall also ensure the legal and regulatory compliance for the hotels' accounting and financial reporting functions.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect, interpret and report financial data
  • Report on hotel status on a regular basis and possess the ability to meet its strategic and operational objectives
  • Collect and analyze cost data versus budget for ascertaining financial performance and risk assessment
  • Manage budget and controls expenses
  • Prepare reports and evaluations for individual projects
  • Develop, monitor and enforce policies and procedures relevant to accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and project tracking
  • Communicate and collaborate with departmental leaders to stay abreast of spending, budgeting, reports, and evaluation
  • Monitor legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to financial reporting and operations, and ensure hotel compliance
  • Lead and supervise finance department staff on accounting, reporting, internal controls, budgeting, and other financial matters
  • Investigate variances in budgets, reporting, internal controls, and general accounting; deploy measures to resolve variances
  • Hire, train, develop and appraise staff
  • Arrange for audits as necessary

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of 34 years progressive senior Hotel Accounting experience including a minimum of 4 years Hotel Area Controller position experience
  • Extensive, experience and knowledge in dealing with accounting systems, budgets, internal controls, business planning, and asset management
  • Technology proficiency; Fully competent with current Oracle accounting software system, Opera PMS, POS Systems, Windows based software programs and online commercial banking software
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
  • High level of integrity, confidentially, and accountability
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • A welldefined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills
  • Excellent teamwork and team building skills
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with other departments, key business partners, and government agencies
  • Experience creating and managing budgets for a large, distributed organization
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office productivity suite
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada

Working Conditions

  • Travel may be required
  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
  • Overtime as required to meet the needs of the business
