As the Board's new Manager, Employee Support and Wellness, you will play a vital role in advancing the Board's mission by acting as a trusted advisor and facilitator of change with the Board Trustees, Executive Council, school principals and vice-principals, managers, supervisors, union leaders and association chairs.

About the Role

Responsibilities:

The HWDSB Manager, Employee Support and Wellness will be responsible for the following:

  • Wellness program and promotion
  • Early intervention
  • Attendance support
  • Short term disability (selfinsured adjudication program) and facilitate to long term disability program.
  • Long term disability return to work facilitation with third party insurers
  • Workplace Safety and Insurance Board claims management

This position will lead a team responsible for supporting employees in managing occupational and non-occupational disabilities as well as attendance support while ensuring a high level of service to employees and supervisors.


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the entire Employee Support and Wellness department who are responsible for adjudication of employee absence cases, development and communication of safe and early return to work and disability management practices, policies, and available supports for staff.
  • Develop, implement and manage the Board's wellness programs including staff mental health initiatives.
  • Manage, review and assess data to identify and respond to employee support and wellness challenges across a diverse range of employee groups.
  • Collaborate with system leaders to design, implement, and maintain a comprehensive employee support and wellness strategy.
  • Collaborate with and influence staff to promote employee support and wellness programs with an emphasis on equity and inclusion.
  • Expand early intervention resources to support employee support and wellness throughout the Board.
  • Lead employee support and wellness training programs for staff
  • Provide direction and training to all staff responsible for supporting employees with occupational and nonoccupational absence and disabilities.
  • Manage contracts for Employee and Family Assistant (EFAP) provider.
  • Provide ongoing development of best practices and create and review policies and procedures as required.

Qualifications and Experience:


  • Postsecondary diploma/degree related to (Human Resources, Legal Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Business, Public Policy, Disability Management Certificate/Diploma, Healthcare; Kinesiology, Occupational Therapist, Rehabilitation, Wellness)
    or equivalent related education progressive years' experience in disability management programs
  • Professional designation such as but not limited to; Disability Management Professional (CDMP), a Return to Work Coordinator (CRTWC) or Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP/L), Human Resources Certificate, Disability Management Certificate/Diploma, Paralegal, C.O.H.N., would be considered an asset
  • Minimum 5 years of proven experience in promoting and leading wellness programs, within a unionized environment preferred
  • Experience in conducting research, including the analysis of statistical data and trends
  • Experience in development of policies, including research, writing, interpreting and evaluating policies
  • Solid understanding of and experience in implementing The National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety and Excellence Canada's Healthy Workplace Standard
  • Demonstrated knowledge of workplace wellness, health promotion strategies and adult education theories
  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability in corporate core competenc
