Position Description


To provide feminist (diverse intersectional) based compassionate and innovative daily supports in support of women and their children living in the shelter.

Major responsibilities will include cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing surfaces, adhering to the health and safety standards of Interval House of Hamilton, Health Protection and Promotion Act and Public Health Standards; assistance with sorting and maximizing donations; light maintenance, such as changing light bulbs, moving and assembling furniture, painting, and small repairs; promote and implement a safe, secure, and comfortable shelter; carrying out all organization and administrative functions associated with the cleaner/maintenance position; problem solve and decision making in managing behavioral problems/challenges; identify and report repairs to the Director of Programs and Service and the Residential Supervisor, or their designate.


Key Activities

  • Cleans and disinfects all surface areas, including bathrooms, common kitchens, desks, dining areas, and conference and office rooms;
  • Replaces toilet paper, hand towels and paper towel holders, soaps and hand sanitizers;
  • Dusts the surfaces within a room and hallways;
  • Mops and polishes floors;
  • Picks up any trash and empties the trash and recycling bins;
  • Assists frontline staff with residential room turnovers and minor repairs;
  • Makes beds, washes linens, and changes the linens;
  • Cleans and scrubs windows;
  • Responds to resident requests such as for cleaning supplies, assistance, and room items;
  • Performs general maintenance duties and scheduled preventive maintenance work on physical facilities, equipment, and grounds;
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in plumbing, electrical, fire and life safety systems;
  • Assembles, moves, delivers, sets up and picks up furniture and equipment;
  • Performs general repair work on structures, patches & paints any damaged walls;
  • Assists frontline staff and the Residential Supervisor, or designate in the inspection of program sites, grounds and equipment;
  • Carries out preventive maintenance program actions;
  • Experience in operating digital software systems;
  • Knowledge and understanding of building mechanical systems, HVAC, power generation, plumbing, electrical, fire and life safety, and medical;
  • Requests necessary materials, supplies, parts and tools required and maintains control of storage and use;
  • Takes every precaution that is reasonable in the circumstances to ensure the health and safety of employees, residents, and all others in the workplace;
  • Accepting donations, sorting donations, and assisting with distributing donations;

Qualifications Required Education Secondary school diploma, or equivalent. Experience Minimum two years' experience working in a similar role. Other Valid First Aid/CPR certification, valid WHMIS certification, valid Food Safe Handling Certification, valid certification in Bill 168, valid certification in AODA, valid certification in Occupational Health and Safety, proof of valid Ontario driver's license and a fully insured road worthy vehicle with an insurance minimum of two million in collision/personal liability, or the ability to meet all travel requirements of the job, original copy of police vulnerable sector clearance and meet the requirements of vulnerable sector standards for employment by our agency.
