    Unit Summary

    McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH) is part of the Hamilton Health Sciences' family of hospitals. MCH serves a community of 2.3 million people from south central Ontario and beyond.

    The Adolescent Medicine Program runs an ambulatory clinic which provides a variety of clinical services provided by a multidisciplinary team and an inter-professional approach to services, within a family-centered environment.

    Evidenced-based interventions and strength-based approaches are integral to our daily practice.

    Position Summary As a member of the interdisciplinary Health Care Team, the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (RN-EC) uses clinical expertise and in-depth knowledge of adolescent medical complexities, including that of gender diversity in children and adolescents and their families, to provide gender -affirming care.

    This includes the application of knowledge and treatment interventions for co-morbid mental health presentations.

    The RN-EC will collaborate with the team to provide clinical leadership and promote excellence in the Pediatric Adolescent Medicine Program including family centered nursing care through advanced clinical practice, interprofessional educational support, consultation, leadership and research.

    The RN-EC role will be to provide advanced practice nursing care for children and adolescents.

    The RN-EC will support children and adolescents and their families with children who are part of the Adolescent Medicine Program.

    The RN-EC will be instrumental in the delivery of care including the identification, sharing and implementation of best practices where applicable.

    The RN-EC will facilitate the enhancement of the delivery of inter-professional care. The RN-EC will work collaboratively with the team to develop and implement a plan of care.

    The RN-EC will be involved in the identification and delivery of interventions including group psycho education, individual and group cognitive behavioral therapy and family therapy.

    The RN-EC will collaborate with the physician team in the medical management of patients within the Adolescent Medicine Program. Included in those responsibilities will be the assessment and monitoring of interventions, including pharmacologic therapy. The RN-EC will also participate as a community liaison and patient advocate. Proven effective collaboration and communication skill with health care teams is essential.

    The RN-EC will bring evidence-based practice in the field of adolescent health (including gender affirming care) and will incorporate research and evidence into nursing and inter-professional practice and policy.

    The RN-EC will work collaboratively with the team to develop and implement a plan of intervention, which addresses physical and mental health and wellness.

    The RN-EC will liaise with the patient's referring team and with other treatment programs to ensure that the patient receives appropriate care.

    Utilizing advanced nursing knowledge, skill, clinical reasoning, problem solving and critical thinking, all duties and responsibilities will follow the RN-EC Standards of Practice set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, and Code of Conduct set by Hamilton Health Sciences.

    This position reports to the Program Director and the Chief of Interprofessional Practice. Schedule Work Hours
    Monday to Friday; days (some evenings may be required)

    Qualifications 1) Current Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse Extended Class (RNEC)2) Master's of Nursing3) Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (RNEC) or Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (RNEC)4) Clinical nursing focus and expertise in Child and Adolescent Mental Health preferred5) In-depth knowledge of trans-specific healthcare needs and social determinants of health impacting trans, non-binary and gender-diverse communities in Hamilton considered an asset6) Demonstrated knowledge with the Mental Health Act, Consent to Treatment Act, Child and Family Services -Act, and World Professional Association for Transgender Health guidelines preferred7) Demonstrated ability to work using an intersectional, anti-oppressive and anti-racist approach8) Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving and communication skills9) Demonstrated ability to foster collegial relationships within and amongst teams10) Demonstrated expertise and knowledge in program development, performance assessment, evaluation, quality improvement activities11) Demonstrated ability and interest in research related to pediatric and adolescent gender affirming care and eating disorders an asset 12) Eligible for cross appointment to the McMaster University School of Nursing at both the undergraduate and graduate levels As a condition of employment, you are required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to Employee Health Services.
