Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is one of the largest school divisions in Alberta, serving the educational needs of approximately 17,750 students in 42 schools.

EIPS is recruiting a temporary full-time Summer Planning Assistant with our Facility Services department.

Facility Services is located at the EIPS Central Administration building in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the division, Central administration is comprised of eight departments, in addition to the Board of Trustees.

The departments include Education Executive, Communication Services, Facility Services, Student Transportation, Human Resources, Financial Services, Supports for Students, and Information Technologies.

Commencing April 15, 2024

Ending August 30, 2024

37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday - 7.5 hours per day)

Position Summary


This position will assist the Planning group within the Facilities Services department in the collection, analysis, and reporting of technical information.

The Planning Assistant will primarily work on two major projects over the position's duration.

They will support the Assistant Director of Planning and the Planner in updating the Division's Ten-Year Facilities Plan and implementing Joint Use and Planning Agreements.


The Ten-Year Facilities Plan provides a broad overview of EIPS' existing facilities, including age, condition, historical and current utilization, and anticipated needs as a result of projected changes in enrolment and facility condition.

It assists EIPS, Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure to identify trends affecting long-range facility requirements and strategies to support the school jurisdiction's planned program delivery.


A Joint Use and Planning Agreement (JUPA) is a formal agreement mandated under the Municipal Government Act and the Education Act that must be established between school authorities and Municipalities.

EIPS is currently developing JUPAs with our surrounding urban and rural municipal partners.

Other duties may include supporting the Division's public engagement activities, demographic analysis, land development monitoring, GIS and file management.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

Conduct research on the Ten-Year Facility Plan's to develop best practices and procedures.

Assist the Planner in demographic data collection and analysis.


Assist the Planner in researching Joint Use and Planning Agreements and make recommendations to ensure they comply with all relevant legislation.

Recommend, review and implement best practices in collaboration with department staff.

Ability to handle multiple projects and prioritize effectively.

Monitor land development as it relates to student enrolment.

Supports planning and data collection for stakeholder engagements.

Assists Planning staff with special projects and carries out other duties as assigned.

Education/Qualifications

Working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in Planning or equivalent.

Alberta school board experience is an asset.

Experience in AutoCAD, GIS (ESRI and QGIS) and PowerBI is considered an asset.

A valid class 5 driver's license will be considered an asset.
