The City of Calgary - Green Line has an opportunity for a junior or intermediate lawyer with an interest in governance to support the Green Line Board and Green Line Board Committees and an interest in undertaking legal work related to a large construction project such as Green Line.

Reporting to the Manager, Legal Services, Green Line, this position will be located with the Green Line Program team and will have a significant degree of responsibility in assisting with governance matters and legal issues that arise during the development phase and implementation phase of a large design-build-finance project.


Primary duties include:

  • Provide support to the Green Line Board, including:
  • Draft and prepare corporate governance related documents for presentation to the Board and its Committees.
  • Provide advice on corporate governance, including for conflicts of interest.
  • Ensure requests made of the Board or by Board members relevant to governance are responded to in a timely manner, including any requests made in relation to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Update and maintain Board governance materials and policies and develop a systematic schedule for their review.
  • Prepare agendas for Board and Committee meetings, including annotated agendas for Board meetings.
  • Record and/or review and edit Committee meeting minutes and oversee the distribution of minutes.
  • Manage day to day Board activities and concerns and act as the primary point of contact between the Board and Board Committees and other City Business Units, such as City Clerk's Office.
  • Negotiate, draft, and/or review various types of contracts and agreements, including procurement documents, construction contracts, consulting contracts, confidentiality agreements, agreements with utility providers, and various types of correspondence.
  • Provide timely legal advice and opinions in the areas of procurement, construction, access, regulatory issues, and on other related matters that may arise, including undertaking legal research as required.

Qualifications
***Juris Doctor (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or equivalent degree from a recognized institution and be an active member or eligible for membership with The Law Society of Alberta.

  • At least 3 years of related experience.
  • Experience in governance or contract/commercial law is considered an asset.
  • Strong communication skills; excellent writing, drafting and analytical skills; exceptionally organized and detail oriented, and efficient time management skills.

Position Type: 1 Permanent- Location: st Street S.E and- 800 Macleod Trail S.E.- Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience- Lawyer 1: $86, ,639 per annum (typically 0-4 years experience)- Lawyer 2: $100, ,531 per annum (typically 5+ years experience)- Days of Work: This position works a 5 day- work week earning 1 day off in a 3 week cycle
