About the position

With the potential of establishing place-based protection for strategic ecosystems and biodiversity in the Salish Sea being stronger today than at any other time in history, we are at an exciting time to play a significant part in the future health of this region.

From the BC Coastal Marine Strategy, to the Southern Strait of Georgia National Marine Conservation Area Reserve proposal, to Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas, and Marine Spatial Planning South (Salish Sea/Strait of Juan de Fuca), and inspired by the recently announced Great Bear Sea MPA Network, the federal government's pathway to protecting 25% of Canada's oceans by 2025 and the global commitment to protect 30% of oceans by 2030, the processes are many, and the stakeholders are broad.

GSA is creating
a new position for a full time Marine Planning Coordinator to help us develop a new initiative which will focus on deepening our understanding of and engagement in these government led processes, building awareness of the importance of marine planning and protection mechanisms to tackle the threats to the region and, working with our Community Organizer, connecting with impacted communities on issues of interest and concern.

This initiative will focus on helping to make marine planning establishment efforts in the Salish Sea region successful and impactful, meet strong conservation standards and include a diversity of communities and voices in the planning process.

Responsibilities of this position include actively participating in government planning processes; maintaining knowledge of government processes and opportunities for engagement and influence; leading the development of GSA's community led vision for the protection of the Salish Sea watershed; co-development of community engagement strategies based on best practices and community input; keeping abreast of emerging issues; and, developing deep understanding of the threats to the Salish Sea and the role marine planning can play in addressing them.

This position works closely with campaign leads and the community organizer, and reports directly to the Campaigns Manager

You will succeed in this role if you are excited to build something new from scratch, are comfortable with uncertainty, are adept at seeing the connections between science, policy and community, and you love meetings and community gatherings.

You are comfortable in formal and informal settings, have patience to listen and develop relationships authentically, and are curious to learn about systems so you can play a part in changing them.

You also will succeed if you are collaborative, have the ability to understand policy and ecology, and turn it into content that excites someone with no knowledge of either.
