Duties and Responsibilities:
Position Summary


The General Manager is accountable to the Executive Board of the Community Centre and is responsible for the day-to-day facility operations to ensure successful delivery of recreational, social and athletic programs to the community.

This involves the supervision of other paid staff and working closely as a resource to Board members in charge of Programs and Sports.

The General Manager must be a self-starter with a keen desire to work for the betterment of the Community Centre and its role in the community.

A Strong mechanical aptitude, excellent people skills and solid grasp of current technology are valuable traits in consideration of this position.

This is a full-time management position. The incumbent will work Monday through Friday with specific hours to be determined by the Centre's Executive. Some weekend and evening work will be required based on staffing requirements, special events or unforeseen circumstances.

  • Collaborate with volunteers to ensure that all program needs within facility and/or grounds are in place.
  • Act as liaison between the Board of Directors and the Community Centre's users and parents.
  • Participates in the recruitment, evaluation and dismissal of all employees at the Centre.
  • Reviews and approves payroll of other staff prior to processing.
  • Completion of all grants for the Centre in collaboration with all stakeholders.
  • Attends all meetings of the Board of Directors and Committees.
  • Ensures proper records are kept
  • Develops and recommends operating policies and procedures for the Centre to the Board of Directors for approval.
  • Assists in helping to determine necessary fees and fee changes for various programs, sports, and services.
  • Assists with the preparation of an annual budget for the Centre.
  • Responsible for overall ice scheduling while working in conjunction with the minor hockey association and ringette association ice schedulers to maximize ice usage wile ensuring fair distribution.
  • Work Executive Board to negotiate and administer all service contracts.
  • General filing to be done in accordance with different areas of the Community Centre.
  • All mail arriving at the Community Centre must be date stamped and distributed as necessary
  • Assist the VP Treasurer with gathering information relating to invoicing and vendor payments.
  • Above average computer skills specifically relating to the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • General tasks may include any tasks required by Board members. Examples include such things working with Tournament Convenor to process necessary permits, making signs and posters and helping to plan events.
  • Schedule and oversee work done in the Centre by outside contractors and ensure that all protocols have been met (insurance requirements, permits etc).
  • Must have an understanding of the relationship and requirements in place with the City of Winnipeg as it relates to Community Centres (including all monthly and annual reporting / certification / inspection requirements).
  • Ascertains daily work to be done by staff, the priority of the work, and schedules it accordingly.
  • Oversees daily and preventative maintenance and general caretaking performed by other Centre employees or volunteers.
  • Orders and receives all supplies required by the Centre (excluding canteen food/beverage and sports equipment)
  • Assists the board to Identify, determine costs and evaluate all projects of a major upgrading or capital nature for consideration and approval by the Board of Directors.
  • Ensures all grounds including fields, tennis courts, rinks and ball diamonds are safe and well maintained.
  • Ensures snow clearing from parking lot and entrances is performed on a timely basis.
  • Arranges for or picks up fuel as required for equipment at both Centre locations.
  • Direct staff to check and clean all washrooms, showers, change rooms, and canteen daily to maintain a neat and tidy condition.
  • Direct staff to set up and take down for daily functions
  • Direct staff to keep all entrances and exits clear of snow and ice, and shovel all sidewalks.
  • Direct staff to check all building lights and exterior lights daily.
  • Direct staff to wash walls and windows as needed.
  • Direct staff to wash and wax floors as needed.
  • Direct staff to cut grass, remove weeds, etc. to keep the grounds in a neat condition. Pick up garbage daily.
  • Check and maintain furnaces and water heaters.
  • Report any damage to the president.
  • Enforce the Centre's rules.
  • When staffing requirements dictate; flood, clean and maintain ice, check and maintain all ice equipment.
  • Work with ice schedule and head ice technician to determine arena staff requirements and other arena requirements.
  • Experience operating tractor/loader/snow blower, commercial riding lawnmower and other implements necessary in the operation of a community centre.
  • Experience in basic repairs requiring use of hand tools and power tools.
