The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia's (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus.

The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

Hours per week:
Varies, approximately 20 to 25 hours per week


Compensation:
$22.00 per hour


We are recruiting for a Building Operations Maintenance Assistant to help support the upkeep of our state-of-the-art, 250,000 square foot facility.

The Building Operations Maintenance Assistant is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and repair of all venues and equipment in the Student Union Building (THE NEST) in compliance with AMS standards and procedures and regulatory legislations (e.g.

Food Safe Standards, WHIMIS).

They provide day to day maintenance of the facility to keep all building fabric, fittings and equipment in good repair.

This is a great position for those who are completing their education and have some experience in handy work or alternatively those who have industry experience and are looking for a single facility operation.

The duties and responsibilities of the Building Operations Maintenance Assistant are:

  • Minor repairs to furniture and equipment
  • Minor painting and finishing
  • Ordering supplies as per AMS standards and procedures
  • Maintaining in order and safely utilizing workshop equipment, tools and supplies
  • Loading and moving of materials, including furniture and equipment
  • General maintenance and handyperson duties: assembling, lifting, moving
  • Cleaning duties: sweeping, mopping, clearing beer lines, maintaining the loading dock areas and workshop
  • Other duties as required
  • Experience in basic drywall, painting and other repair work is an asset
  • Trades background as a building maintenance worker, handyman, cooling technician, carpenter or similar is an asset
  • Trade certifications such as WHIMIS
  • Intermediate computer skills
  • Required to speak, read and write English well
  • Demonstrated positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Physically fit to perform the duties
  • Ability to lift up to 60kgs (132lbs)
