Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Fermentation Scientist to join our team. This role will focus on the development and optimization of fermentation processes for microalgae cultivation, scaling up production from lab to industrial scale. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing our proprietary ingredient development initiatives and as our first hire in Nova Scotia, the candidate will support the growth of our R&D footprint in the province where we plan to scale our ingredient technology.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, implement, and optimize fermentation processes for the cultivation of microalgae, focusing on yield improvement, cost reduction, and process scalability.
• Lead the development and execution of experiments, which can include setup, operation, and troubleshooting of bioreactors.
• Ensure a rigorous scientific approach in all research activities, maintaining detailed notes and accurate reporting for all experiments and processes.
• Stay updated with the latest advancements in fermentation technology and bioprocess engineering.
• Collaborate with R&D to plan and execute scale up fermentation processes from bench to pilot to commercial scale.
• Analyze and interpret data, prepare detailed reports, and present findings to senior management and stakeholders.
• Maintain rigorous quality control and assurance protocols to meet product specifications and compliance requirements.
• Contribute to intellectual property filings and grant proposals
• Mentor junior scientists and technicians, providing technical guidance and support as needed.

Qualifications:

• Master's or Doctoral degree, preferably in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of industry experience in bioprocess development, particularly fermentation with microalgae or similar organisms.
• Excellent project management skills, adept at managing multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks as needed.
• Proven track record of successful process development and scale-up of bioprocesses and implementation of innovative fermentation technologies.
• Strong analytical and technical skills and proficiency in bioprocess engineering, biology, and statistical data analysis tools.
• Excellent problem-solving abilities and a commitment to achieving practical business outcomes.
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.
• Creative thinker and proactive problem solver with a solution-focused approach.
• A natural curiosity and a strong desire to learn about the science of pet nutrition, the future of feed and food and the industry.
