Summary:

Reports to the Principal and/or a District Administrator, Inclusive Learning, and works under the direction of the classroom teacher(s).

Education Assistants participate as a valuable member of a team in the ongoing implementation of inclusive learning opportunities, and play a key role with the classroom teacher in maintaining a culture of equity and success for all students.


Qualifications:

Successful completion of a secondary school graduation program or equivalent.


Completion of a recognized post-secondary education assistant program, including or supplemented by training related to specific diagnoses such as ASD, diabetes, chronic health impairment, conflict resolution, and non-violent crisis intervention.


One year recent, related experience specific to the needs of students with cognitive, behavioral, emotional, communication, sensory and/or physical, health challenges.


Proven ability to implement positive behavior intervention techniques, as well as flexibility in response to student behaviors (e.g., adjusting and adapting strategies).

Physically capable of performing the duties of the position.

Ability to work independently and cooperatively while following the direction and guidance of the classroom/specialized teacher.

Ability to operate a variety of office and school equipment including equipment specific to the needs of the student(s).

Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

Ability to work collaboratively and use judgement when providing information.


Ability to use patience, tolerance, and understanding in developing and maintaining a rapport with students, and in resolving problems or conflicts that may arise.

Remains current with changing technology, and diagnosis-specific approaches and equipment.

Knowledge of basic first aid.

Current CPI and Non Violent Crisis Intervention.

Knowledge of WorkSafe BC and WHMIS procedures and regulations. Safe work practices.

Some positions may require the knowledge of a language other than English.

Some positions may require Braille, Sign Language or deaf/blind-specific instructional communication strategies.

Some positions may require a valid BC driver's license.
