We currently have an exciting opportunity as a
Tool and Part Design Specialist The tool and Part Design Specialist will be responsible will include carrying out full projects as well as segments of projects, design of new tooling and tooling modifications, creation of technical drawings.

This role will oversee, all assigned, new/revised part testing for assembly, assisting QA in the development of manufacturing/processing work instructions, providing support for new product launches, implementing lean manufacturing/continuous improvement projects.


Principle Accountabilities:


New Product Design:


  • Work with interdisciplinary teams from the start of product design to the product launch
  • Create part designs using inputs from the Innovation team.
  • Use 3D CAD to design and evaluate new products.
  • Produce or acquire prototypes to evaluate the function and manufacturability of new products.
  • Create detail drawings for manufacturing, certification, and QA purposes.
  • Evaluate new products for conformance to required standards i.e. CSA, NSF, UL, etc.
  • Assist in determining critical dimensions and inspection requirements.

New Mould/Tooling Acquisition and Commissioning:


  • Acquire new moulds and evaluate mould designs as per Canplas standards; providing approval for final design
  • Ensure smooth process throughout building of mould, shipping and final inspection/evaluation upon arrival in house
  • Conducting interdepartmental Design-Review meetings for mould/tooling
  • Work collaboratively with processing department and QA to issue test notice, evaluation of test as well as facilitate any mould modifications required.

Automation, Assembly & Jig/Fixture Design:


  • Design jigs and fixtures using 3D CAD program, creating detailed drawings.
  • Assemble and troubleshoot the jigs and fixtures.
  • Training of the production trainers in the use of the jig and fixtures.

Mould/Tooling Modifications:


  • Use appropriate measuring instruments to reverse engineer various components. (micrometers, Vernier's, CMM, etc.)
  • Create detailed sketches and drawings for use by inside and outside machine shops.
  • Provide troubleshooting to various departments to solve issues with molds, and tooling
  • Issue Tooling requests and Mould shop workorders

Qualifications:


  • Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Injection mould design experience required.
  • Experience building and designing custom fixtures an asset.
  • Ability to operate 3D CAD systems (Solidworks, AutoCAD experience an asset).
  • Cadkey, and KeyCreator knowledge an asset
  • Continuous improvement mindset; implementing new techniques such as Lean, SMED, 8D's, PFMEA's, DFMEA's, etc.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; high level of attention to detail
  • Member of OACETT

Education:


  • DCS / DEC (preferred)

Experience:

Manufacturing Environment: 2 years (required)

  • Injection mould design: 1 year (preferred)

Licence/Certification:

  • Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technician (preferred)
