Position Summary:


Under the direction of the Trauma and Spiritual Care Director, the Trauma and Addiction Counsellor works with patients in CTAP and TPIP.

The purpose of this position is to help patients:

develop skills to self-regulate mentally, emotionally, and somatically; lessen symptoms of trauma; begin recovery from addictions if applicable; develop and achieve goals during treatment, understand how trauma has impacted their lives and relationships; prepare for continuing care and reintegration to their home life.

The Trauma and Addiction Counsellor also provides education about trauma, addiction, and the process of recovery from both, and communicates regularly with patients' referrers, and family members.


Duties and responsibilities:


  • Competently manage patients with various mental health issues including trauma, substance use disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
  • Establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with each patient.
  • Assess each patient's goals and barriers to meeting those goals within one week of patient's admission date, and in an ongoing way throughout their treatment.
  • Aid patients in learning, developing, and practicing healthy coping skills.
  • Help patients identify their unhealthy and maladaptive behaviours and appropriately address the patterns that are impacting their daily functioning.
  • Provide individual clinical intervention, including Accelerated Resolution Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
  • Provide each patient with treatment tasks that are designed to help them meet their individual treatment goals.
  • Meet with patients on a regular basis to identify treatment issues and goals, coordinating across the broader clinical team when appropriate.
  • Attend weekly case conferencing meetings and supervision with the clinical team when appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain regular communication with referrers and family members, where applicable and appropriate, including conference calls that include the patient.
  • Prepare reports in a timely manner and meet reporting deadlines.
  • Maintain appropriate and up to date documentation through KIPU digital recordkeeping.
  • Provide individual interventions including exposure therapy when/where applicable.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in psychology or a related discipline is required. A combination of education and experience will be considered if Master's degree is in process.
  • Knowledge of Somatic Therapy, A.R.T., CBT, DBT, Narrative Therapy, experience in distress tolerance, interpersonal awareness, emotional regulation, and SIT skills.
  • Knowledge of substance use disorders.
  • Experience in facilitating groups, lecturing, and educational presentations.
  • The successful applicant will have a combination of education, training, and experience in the field of addictions and mental health.
  • Must possess superior reading, writing and communication skills; both verbally and in writing.
  • Must have good hearing and eyesight.
  • Must be able to understand and follow directions.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Must be willing to give and receive feedback.
